This advanced training course is dedicated entirely to gas lift and is built for production engineers who design, operate and optimize wells in gas-lifted fields. Rather than comparing lift methods, it takes gas lift as a given and goes deep into the engineering decisions that determine whether a gas-lifted well produces at its potential: where gas is injected, through which valve, at what rate and at what pressure. The course starts with gas lift well performance, including the effect of injection on flowing gradients, gas lift performance curves, the point of balance and the surface injection system. It then covers the mechanics of injection-pressure operated and production-pressure operated valves, opening and closing pressure calculations, temperature-corrected dome pressures, test rack settings and gas passage through valve ports and orifices. A strong emphasis is placed on unloading design and valve spacing for continuous gas lift, on surveillance and troubleshooting, and on field-wide optimization. Participants will interpret flowing pressure and temperature surveys and casing and tubing pressure records to identify multipointing, heading, valve failures, tubing leaks and injection restrictions, and will learn to allocate limited injection gas across wells and gathering networks. The final day extends the design work to dual and intermittent gas lift. Through hand calculations, design exercises and field case studies, participants will develop the ability to produce defensible gas lift designs, set valves correctly, diagnose underperforming wells and recover lost production. Artificial lift method selection is covered in separate courses and is not repeated here.
