Course Overview

The FPSO Operations & Maintenance Training Course equips operations, maintenance, marine, and integrity professionals with a comprehensive, practical understanding of how floating production, storage, and offloading facilities are operated, maintained, and kept safe throughout their life. FPSOs combine marine systems, hydrocarbon processing, storage, and offloading on a single floating unit, often in remote offshore locations with limited space, complex logistics, and demanding weather conditions. Their safe and reliable operation depends on close integration between marine and process operations, disciplined maintenance and integrity management, and compliance with both oil and gas and maritime requirements. The course covers the FPSO as an integrated system. Participants learn FPSO concepts and configurations, including new-build and converted hulls and spread-moored and turret-moored arrangements, marine systems such as ballast, cargo tanks, inert gas, crude oil washing, and mooring, turrets, and swivels, and the subsea interface through risers and umbilicals. The program then addresses topsides processing, including separation, oil stabilization, produced water treatment, gas compression, dehydration, injection, and flaring, utilities and power generation, and offloading operations with shuttle tankers and fiscal metering. Participants also examine maintenance strategies, integrity management of hull, topsides, mooring, and risers, class, flag, and regulatory requirements, safety systems and emergency response, operating models, performance management, and life extension and decommissioning. The course is delivered through system walkthroughs, schematics, videos, case studies of FPSO incidents, and operations and maintenance planning exercises. Participants leave with an FPSO systems overview guide, a marine and process interface checklist, a maintenance and integrity planning template, an offloading operations checklist, and an FPSO operational readiness and safety checklist.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze FPSO concepts, configurations, and applications, including new-build and converted hulls and spread-moored and turret-moored arrangements, on Day 1.
  • Describe FPSO marine systems, including ballast, cargo tanks, inert gas, crude oil washing, tank cleaning, and marine utilities.
  • Explain mooring systems, turrets, swivels, risers, and umbilicals and their operating and integrity requirements.
  • Describe topsides processing systems, including separation, oil stabilization, produced water treatment, gas compression, dehydration, gas and water injection, and flaring.
  • Explain FPSO utilities, including power generation, fuel gas, cooling, heating, nitrogen, fresh water, and HVAC systems.
  • Apply safe offloading practices for tandem and side-by-side operations with shuttle tankers, including hawser, hose, and fiscal metering operations.
  • Integrate marine and process operations, including cargo management, stability, and production continuity.
  • Develop maintenance strategies for FPSO equipment using preventive, predictive, risk-based, and reliability-centered approaches.
  • Apply integrity management practices to the hull, topsides, mooring, turret, risers, and pressure systems, including inspection and corrosion management.
  • Explain class, flag state, coastal state, and international maritime and oil and gas regulatory requirements for FPSOs.
  • Apply safety systems, including emergency shutdown, fire and gas detection, fire protection, evacuation, and emergency response, to FPSO operations.
  • Evaluate FPSO operating models, performance management, life extension, and decommissioning considerations by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for FPSO operations and production personnel, maintenance engineers and supervisors, marine officers and marine operations staff, integrity and inspection engineers, and offshore installation managers and supervisors. It is also relevant for process, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation engineers, HSE and process safety professionals, planners, and onshore support and asset management teams responsible for FPSO performance. It is particularly valuable for professionals in oil and gas operators with FPSO assets, FPSO owners and lease-and-operate contractors, engineering, procurement, construction, and installation contractors, marine and offshore service companies, classification societies and inspection service providers, and regulators and government entities overseeing offshore production.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how an FPSO works as an integrated marine and production facility.
  • Describe the main marine systems and their roles in safe operation.
  • Explain how mooring, turret, swivel, and riser systems work and fail.
  • Describe the topsides process from well fluids to export-quality oil.
  • Explain the key utilities that support FPSO operations.
  • Plan and supervise safe offloading operations.
  • Coordinate marine and process activities to maintain safety and production.
  • Develop effective maintenance strategies for FPSO equipment.
  • Manage hull, topsides, mooring, and riser integrity.
  • Explain the regulatory and class requirements that apply to FPSOs.
  • Apply FPSO safety systems and emergency response arrangements.
  • Assess options for improving performance and extending FPSO life.
