The Flare Systems Design & Operation Training Course equips process, mechanical, and operations engineers with the practical knowledge needed to design, evaluate, operate, and maintain flare systems that safely dispose of relief, depressuring, and process vent streams while minimizing flaring and emissions. Flare systems are among the most critical safety systems in refineries, petrochemical plants, gas processing facilities, LNG plants, and oil and gas production facilities. Inadequate flare capacity, liquid carryover, air ingress, pilot failure, excessive radiation, or poor operating practices can lead to fires, explosions, equipment damage, community complaints, and environmental violations. The course covers the flare system from relief sources to flare tip, informed by widely used API standards and recommended practices for pressure-relieving and depressuring systems and flare details. Participants learn flare system purposes and configurations, the determination of flare loads from relief scenarios such as fire, blocked outlets, power and cooling failures, and depressuring, and the design of flare headers, including backpressure, velocity, noise, vibration, and low-temperature considerations. The program then addresses knockout drums, liquid seal drums, purge systems and seals, flare stack and tip types, including elevated, ground, and enclosed flares, smokeless flaring using steam and air assistance, pilots and ignition systems, and radiation, dispersion, and noise calculations. Participants also examine flare gas recovery, flaring minimization and emissions reduction, flare metering and monitoring, safe startup and operation, maintenance and turnaround inspection, and troubleshooting of common flare problems. The course is delivered through design calculation examples, flare system schematics, case studies of flare incidents, and operating and troubleshooting exercises. Participants leave with a flare load assessment worksheet, a header and knockout drum review checklist, a radiation calculation worksheet, a flare operation and monitoring checklist, and a flaring minimization plan template.
