Bolted flanged joints are among the most common leak points in oil refineries, petrochemical plants, oil and gas facilities, and power plants. A single leak from a joint in hydrocarbon, sour, or high-temperature service can lead to fire, hazardous release, or unplanned unit shutdown. The Flange Integrity: Bolted Joint Integrity and Gaskets Training Course equips static equipment, maintenance, and inspection engineers and technicians with the technical knowledge and practical methodology needed to assemble, tighten, inspect, and manage bolted joints so that they achieve reliable sealing throughout their service life, not only during testing. The course content is built on the realities of static equipment maintenance in refinery units, where the causes of flange leaks are specific and familiar to anyone who has worked through a turnaround: bolts tightened based on personal experience rather than calculated torque values; the effect of lubrication and friction on actual bolt load being ignored; gaskets unsuitable for the service or the flange facing; reuse of damaged gaskets or bolts; flange faces not inspected for finish and flatness; poor alignment between flanges; incorrect tightening sequences; loss of bolt load due to creep relaxation and thermal cycling; and missing records showing who assembled the joint, how, and to what values. The course is anchored in ASME PCC-1 guidelines for pressure boundary bolted flange joint assembly and links them in practical terms to the complementary standards and references engineers use every day, including ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47 for flanges, ASME B16.20 for metallic, spiral wound, and ring joint gaskets, ASME B16.21 for non-metallic flat gaskets, flange design requirements in ASME Section VIII, bolting material specifications such as ASTM A193, ASTM A194, and ASTM A320, sour service requirements in refineries, and industry guidance on managing the integrity of bolted joints. The program covers bolted joint behavior, selection of flanges, gaskets, and bolting, calculation of target bolt stress and required torque, joint preparation, flange face inspection and alignment, tightening sequences, controlled bolting methods using torque and hydraulic tensioning, leak testing, leak diagnosis, and management of a joint integrity program including personnel qualification. The course is delivered in a classroom setting using an interactive, application-focused approach that compensates for field work through intensive practical tools. These include worked examples of target bolt stress and required torque calculations accounting for the nut factor, photographs of actual flange face, gasket, and bolt defects, videos of different tightening methods, case studies of leaks and incidents involving bolted joints, and review of sample joint assembly records. Participants leave with a joint preparation and inspection checklist, a bolted joint assembly and tightening work procedure, a joint assembly record template, a methodology for classifying critical joints, and an improvement plan for the joint integrity program in their facilities.
