Course Overview

The Fire Safety & Firefighting Management Training Course equips fire safety officers, HSE professionals, facility managers, emergency response team leaders, and supervisors with the knowledge and practical skills needed to prevent fires, design and maintain effective fire protection arrangements, manage evacuation, and lead firefighting and fire emergency response. Fires in industrial plants, oil and gas facilities, power and utility sites, warehouses, commercial and public buildings, hospitals, schools, and residential complexes can cause loss of life, major asset damage, business interruption, and environmental harm. Most serious fires result from inadequate fire prevention, poorly maintained fire protection systems, blocked escape routes, untrained personnel, and weak emergency organization. The course covers fire safety management from fire science to emergency command, informed by internationally recognized fire codes and standards and national civil defense and fire safety requirements. Participants learn fire chemistry and behavior, heat transfer, fire development, classes of fire, and common causes of fire, and how to conduct fire risk assessments and implement fire prevention measures, including control of ignition sources, flammable materials, hot work, and housekeeping. The program then addresses passive fire protection, including compartmentation, fire doors, and fire stopping, and active fire protection, including fire detection and alarm systems, sprinklers, fire water systems and pumps, hydrants and hose systems, foam systems, clean agent and gaseous suppression, and portable extinguishers, together with their inspection, testing, and maintenance. Participants also examine means of escape, emergency lighting and signage, evacuation planning including people requiring assistance, fire wardens and emergency response teams, firefighting principles and tactics for building and industrial fires, including flammable liquid, pool, jet, and storage tank fires, firefighter protective equipment and breathing apparatus, incident command and coordination with civil defense, fire drills, post-fire investigation, and fire safety management system auditing. The course is delivered through fire risk assessment exercises, fire protection system reviews, evacuation planning workshops, tabletop fire emergency exercises, and practical extinguisher demonstrations where facilities permit. Participants leave with a fire risk assessment template, a fire prevention inspection checklist, a fire protection system inspection and testing schedule, an evacuation plan template, and a fire emergency response and incident command guide.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the causes and consequences of fires and lessons from major fire incidents on Day 1.
  • Apply fire chemistry principles, including the fire triangle and tetrahedron, heat transfer, fire development, and classes of fire.
  • Apply internationally recognized fire codes and standards and national civil defense and fire safety requirements.
  • Conduct fire risk assessments for industrial, commercial, and public facilities.
  • Implement fire prevention measures, including control of ignition sources, flammable materials storage, hot work, electrical hazards, and housekeeping.
  • Evaluate passive fire protection, including compartmentation, fire-resistant construction, fire doors, and fire stopping.
  • Evaluate active fire protection systems, including detection and alarm, sprinklers, fire water systems and pumps, hydrants, foam, and clean agent and gaseous suppression.
  • Select and use portable fire extinguishers correctly for different classes of fire.
  • Plan inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment.
  • Design means of escape and evacuation plans, including emergency lighting, signage, assembly points, and arrangements for people requiring assistance.
  • Organize fire wardens and emergency response teams and apply firefighting principles and tactics for building and industrial fires, including flammable liquid, pool, jet, and storage tank fires.
  • Apply incident command, coordination with civil defense, fire drills, post-fire investigation, and fire safety management system audits by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for fire safety officers, HSE managers and professionals, facility and building managers, emergency response and firefighting team leaders and members, and fire wardens. It is also relevant for maintenance engineers responsible for fire protection systems, security supervisors, operations supervisors, and project and design engineers involved in fire protection. It is particularly valuable for professionals in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, and chemical facilities, power, water, and utility plants, manufacturing and warehousing operations, airports, ports, and transport facilities, hospitals, universities, schools, hotels, malls, and commercial and residential complexes, and ministries, municipalities, and government entities responsible for public buildings and facilities.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain how fires start, grow, and spread.
  • Apply relevant fire codes, standards, and civil defense requirements.
  • Conduct a practical fire risk assessment.
  • Implement effective fire prevention measures.
  • Evaluate the adequacy of passive fire protection.
  • Understand how fire detection, sprinkler, fire water, foam, and gaseous systems work.
  • Select and use the correct fire extinguisher safely.
  • Plan and verify inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire protection systems.
  • Develop effective evacuation plans and maintain escape routes.
  • Organize and lead fire wardens and emergency response teams.
  • Apply suitable firefighting tactics for building and industrial fires.
  • Command fire emergencies and coordinate effectively with civil defense.
