Course Overview

This training course is a multidisciplinary field development planning workshop for asset teams, built around one field case that participants carry from discovery and appraisal data to a recommended development plan. Subsurface, wells, facilities, operations and commercial specialists work together, as they would in a real asset team, to frame the decisions, generate and screen concepts, and agree on a plan that management and partners can approve. Participants will frame the development opportunity, define the decision hierarchy, and translate subsurface ranges into production profiles, well counts and phasing options. They will compare facilities and export concepts, from tie-backs and early production systems to standalone platforms, floating production and onshore processing, with attention to flow assurance, operability and future expansion. The course treats uncertainty as a planning input rather than an afterthought. Teams build scenario sets, rank alternatives against technical, cost, schedule and risk criteria, judge the value of further appraisal, and prepare for stage-gate reviews. Simulation results and economic indicators are used at decision level only, without re-teaching reservoir modeling or fiscal analysis. On the final day, each team assembles the FDP document: basis of design, development concept, wells and facilities plan, reservoir management and surveillance plan, HSE and decommissioning considerations, risk register, and the recommendation for the next gate.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Frame a development opportunity with a clear decision hierarchy.
  • Organize an asset team workflow that integrates all disciplines.
  • Translate subsurface ranges into planning production profiles.
  • Evaluate well count, well type, drilling sequence and phasing.
  • Compare facilities and export concepts for different field settings.
  • Assess flow assurance, operability and expansion constraints during concept selection.
  • Build and rank development scenarios using consistent criteria.
  • Apply value of information thinking to appraisal and data acquisition decisions.
  • Use simulation outputs and economic indicators as inputs to concept decisions.
  • Prepare stage-gate deliverables and respond to assurance review findings.
  • Integrate HSE, emissions, local content and decommissioning considerations into the plan.
  • Define a reservoir management and surveillance plan for the selected concept.
  • Write a structured and defensible FDP document.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for reservoir engineers, geologists and geophysicists, petroleum and production engineers, drilling and completion engineers, facilities and process engineers, and development planners who contribute to field development studies and asset team decisions in national and international oil companies, service companies and petroleum authorities. It is particularly suitable for professionals assigned to concept selection, appraisal planning, FDP preparation and development project teams, and for members of stage-gate and peer review panels, including ministry and regulator staff who review submitted development plans. The course also benefits asset managers, team leads, project managers and technical staff moving into integrated roles, who gain the most from working a complete field case alongside colleagues from other disciplines.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the purpose, structure and approval path of a field development plan.
  • Work effectively within a multidisciplinary asset team.
  • Distinguish policy, strategic and tactical decisions in a development study.
  • Convert subsurface ranges into planning cases and production profiles.
  • Select a well count and phasing approach that fits the uncertainty.
  • Screen tie-back, standalone, floating and onshore concepts.
  • Identify flow assurance and export constraints early.
  • Build strategy tables that produce genuinely different development alternatives.
  • Rank alternatives on technical, cost, schedule and risk criteria.
  • Judge when further appraisal is worth its cost and delay.
  • Use simulation and economic results correctly as decision inputs.
  • Maintain a development risk register with owners and mitigation actions.
  • Prepare the deliverables expected at each stage gate and assurance review.
  • Write the main sections of an FDP document, including the surveillance plan.
  • Present and defend a development recommendation.
