The Environmental Policy & Regulation Training Course equips government officials, regulators, environmental managers, legal and compliance professionals, and corporate sustainability leaders with the knowledge and practical skills needed to develop, implement, enforce, and comply with environmental policies and regulations. Environmental regulation shapes how industries, infrastructure, cities, and services operate, and governments across the region are strengthening environmental laws, standards, permitting, and enforcement to address air and water quality, waste, biodiversity, climate change, and resource efficiency. Effective environmental policy requires sound principles, well-designed instruments, credible compliance assurance, and meaningful stakeholder engagement, while regulated organizations need a clear understanding of their obligations to manage risk, avoid penalties, and maintain their license to operate.
The course covers environmental policy and regulation from principles to practice. Participants learn the core principles of environmental policy, including prevention, precaution, polluter pays, and sustainable development, key international environmental agreements, and the structure of national environmental legal and institutional frameworks. The program then addresses the policy cycle, regulatory design and impact assessment, and the choice of policy instruments, including standards, permits, environmental impact assessment, strategic environmental assessment, economic and market-based instruments, and voluntary and information-based approaches. Participants also examine environmental standard setting, permitting and licensing, compliance monitoring, inspections, and enforcement, environmental data and reporting, public participation, climate policy and carbon pricing, circular economy and waste policy, biodiversity and natural resource policy, corporate environmental compliance management, and emerging trends such as sustainability disclosure requirements and carbon border measures.
The course is delivered through case studies of international and regional environmental policies, policy instrument design exercises, permitting and inspection simulations, and compliance planning workshops. Participants leave with a policy instrument selection guide, a regulatory impact assessment template, an environmental permit review checklist, an environmental inspection and enforcement checklist, and an environmental compliance obligations register template.
