Course Overview

The Earned Value Management (EVM) Training Course equips project managers, project control professionals, cost engineers, planners, and PMO staff with the knowledge and practical skills to apply earned value management as an integrated method for measuring project performance and forecasting outcomes. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks, healthcare systems, energy and utility companies, construction, engineering, defense, and technology organizations, and large corporations, EVM provides an objective answer to three essential questions: how much work has actually been accomplished, what it has cost, and what the final cost and completion date are likely to be. Many organizations report cost and schedule separately, compare actual spending with budget, and conclude that a project is on track, when in reality less work has been completed than planned. Others attempt to use EVM but struggle with its foundations: poorly structured baselines, subjective progress measurement, inappropriate earned value techniques, uncontrolled baseline changes, or forecasts that are calculated mechanically without understanding what the indices mean. As a result, EVM data may be mistrusted or ignored, and its value as an early warning system is lost. This course provides a comprehensive and practical guide to EVM, informed by recognized standards and guidelines, including ANSI/EIA-748 earned value management system guidelines, ISO 21508 on earned value management in project and programme management, and widely used practice standards. Participants learn the principles and benefits of EVM and the prerequisites for its effective use, including the work breakdown structure, organizational breakdown structure, responsibility assignment matrix, control accounts, work packages, and planning packages. The program covers establishing the performance measurement baseline, management reserve, and undistributed budget, and selecting appropriate earned value techniques such as fixed formula, weighted milestones, percent complete, units complete, apportioned effort, and level of effort. Participants then calculate and interpret core EVM measures, including planned value, earned value, actual cost, schedule and cost variances, performance indices, estimate to complete, estimate at completion, variance at completion, and the to-complete performance index, and apply earned schedule to improve schedule performance analysis. The course also addresses variance thresholds and analysis, baseline change control, EVM reporting and graphical analysis, integrating EVM with risk management, applying EVM to agile and hybrid projects, contractor EVM reporting, EVM system implementation and surveillance, and common pitfalls. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with extensive calculation exercises, spreadsheet-based EVM models, and a case study project analyzed across multiple reporting periods. Participants leave with an EVM implementation checklist, a performance measurement baseline template, an earned value technique selection guide, an EVM calculation and forecasting model, a variance analysis report template, and an EVM reporting dashboard design.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the principles, benefits, and limitations of earned value management and its role in integrated project control on Day 1.
  • Evaluate recognized EVM standards and guidelines, including ANSI/EIA-748 and ISO 21508, and their key requirements.
  • Develop the prerequisites for EVM, including the work breakdown structure, organizational breakdown structure, responsibility assignment matrix, control accounts, work packages, and planning packages.
  • Establish a performance measurement baseline that integrates scope, schedule, and budget, and define management reserve and undistributed budget.
  • Select and apply appropriate earned value techniques, including fixed formula, weighted milestones, percent complete, units complete, apportioned effort, and level of effort.
  • Calculate and interpret planned value, earned value, actual cost, schedule and cost variances, and schedule and cost performance indices.
  • Develop estimates to complete and estimates at completion using appropriate formulas and bottom-up methods, and calculate variance at completion and the to-complete performance index.
  • Apply earned schedule techniques to improve the analysis and forecasting of schedule performance.
  • Implement variance thresholds, variance analysis, and corrective action processes.
  • Apply baseline change control principles to maintain the integrity of the performance measurement baseline.
  • Evaluate the integration of EVM with risk management, agile and hybrid delivery, and contractor reporting.
  • Design EVM reports, graphical analyses, and an EVM implementation plan for the participant's organization by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for project managers, program managers, project control managers and engineers, cost engineers and cost controllers, planners and schedulers, and PMO staff responsible for measuring, analyzing, or reporting project performance. It is also highly relevant for finance professionals, contract managers, and auditors who review project performance reports or oversee contractors required to report earned value. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, and public authorities overseeing major infrastructure, defense, technology, and transformation programs; in utilities, oil and gas, petrochemical, and power organizations delivering capital projects; in construction, engineering, and consulting firms reporting performance to clients; and in banks, developers, and large corporations managing or financing significant project portfolios. Senior managers who rely on performance reports to make funding and recovery decisions will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how EVM integrates scope, schedule, and cost to measure performance objectively.
  • Describe the key requirements of recognized EVM standards and guidelines.
  • Set up the structures required to implement EVM on a project.
  • Establish and maintain a valid performance measurement baseline.
  • Choose the most suitable earned value technique for different types of work.
  • Calculate core EVM measures accurately and explain what they indicate.
  • Produce and compare forecasts of final cost using different methods.
  • Use earned schedule to analyze and forecast schedule performance more reliably.
  • Analyze variances, identify root causes, and propose corrective actions.
  • Control baseline changes while preserving the integrity of performance data.
  • Apply EVM principles to agile, hybrid, and contracted work.
  • Present EVM results clearly to management and decision makers.
