Course Overview

The Drilling & Well Completion Operations Training Course equips engineers, supervisors, and oil and gas professionals with a comprehensive, practical understanding of how wells are planned, drilled, cased, cemented, and completed safely and efficiently. Drilling and completion typically represent a major share of field development costs, and decisions made during well design and construction determine well productivity, integrity, and life cycle cost. Poor planning or execution can lead to well control incidents, stuck pipe, lost circulation, damaged reservoirs, integrity failures, and costly non-productive time. The course covers the full well construction process. Participants learn well planning and design, including pore and fracture pressure prediction, casing seat selection, and well trajectory, rig types and systems, drill strings and bits, drilling fluids and hydraulics, and directional drilling with measurement and logging while drilling. The program then addresses casing design, cementing and cement evaluation, well control principles and barriers, blowout preventers and kill methods, prevention and management of common drilling problems, and an introduction to formation evaluation. Participants also examine completion design and components, including tubing, packers, safety valves, nipples, sliding sleeves, and artificial lift interfaces, perforating, sand control, completion fluids, well integrity management throughout the well life, drilling performance and cost control, health, safety, and environment, and digital drilling technologies. The course is delivered through well design exercises, equipment schematics, case studies of drilling incidents and completion failures, and well planning workshops. Participants leave with a well planning checklist, a casing and cementing design review guide, a well control and barrier checklist, a completion design selection guide, and a drilling performance and non-productive time analysis template.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the well construction process and its impact on field development cost, well productivity, and integrity on Day 1.
  • Apply well planning principles, including subsurface data review, pore and fracture pressure prediction, casing seat selection, and well trajectory design.
  • Describe rig types and rig systems, including hoisting, rotating, circulating, power, and well control systems, for onshore and offshore operations.
  • Select drill string components, bottomhole assemblies, and drill bits for different formations and objectives.
  • Apply drilling fluid selection, properties, and hydraulics, including equivalent circulating density management.
  • Explain directional drilling methods and tools, including mud motors, rotary steerable systems, and measurement and logging while drilling.
  • Apply casing design principles, including burst, collapse, and tension, and cementing design, placement, and evaluation.
  • Apply well control principles, including kick detection, barriers, blowout preventers, and kill methods.
  • Prevent and manage common drilling problems, including stuck pipe, lost circulation, wellbore instability, and kicks.
  • Design well completions, including completion types and components such as tubing, packers, safety valves, nipples, sliding sleeves, and artificial lift interfaces.
  • Apply perforating, sand control, completion fluid, and well integrity management practices across the well life cycle.
  • Evaluate drilling and completion performance, cost, non-productive time, safety, and digital technologies to improve well delivery by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for drilling and completion engineers, petroleum and production engineers, well site supervisors, and drilling supervisors who plan or execute well construction. It is also relevant for reservoir engineers and geoscientists who work with drilling teams, well integrity engineers, HSE professionals supporting drilling operations, procurement, contract, and cost professionals in drilling, and new engineers joining drilling and wells functions. It is particularly valuable for professionals in national and international oil and gas companies, drilling contractors, oilfield service companies, and regulators and government entities overseeing well construction and integrity.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain each stage of well construction and how they fit together.
  • Contribute effectively to well planning and design.
  • Describe how drilling rigs and their systems work.
  • Select suitable drill strings, assemblies, and bits.
  • Understand how drilling fluids and hydraulics affect drilling performance.
  • Explain directional drilling tools and methods.
  • Review casing and cementing designs.
  • Apply well control principles and understand barrier requirements.
  • Recognize and respond to common drilling problems.
  • Select appropriate completion types and components.
  • Apply perforating, sand control, and well integrity practices.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce non-productive time and cost.
