Course Overview

The Database Management & Administration Training Course equips database administrators, developers, data engineers, and IT professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to design, deploy, secure, tune, back up, and maintain relational databases that are reliable, performant, and well protected. Databases underpin the core systems of government entities, ministries, banks, energy and utility companies, healthcare systems, telecommunications providers, and corporations, holding the data that runs operations, serves customers, and supports decisions. Poorly administered databases lead to slow applications, outages, data loss, security breaches, and compliance failures, while sound database administration keeps critical systems available, fast, and secure. The course covers database management and administration across the major relational platforms, with concepts that apply to systems such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. Participants learn relational database and database management system fundamentals, the role and responsibilities of the database administrator, database architecture including storage, memory, processes, and logging, and installation, configuration, and instance management. The program then addresses data modeling and schema design, SQL for administration, indexing and query optimization, performance monitoring and tuning, backup and recovery strategies, high availability and disaster recovery including replication and clustering concepts, and database security covering authentication, authorization, roles and privileges, encryption, auditing, and protection against threats such as SQL injection. Participants also examine routine maintenance and automation, capacity planning, patching and upgrades, data migration, monitoring and alerting, an introduction to NoSQL and cloud and managed database services, and database governance, data protection, and compliance considerations. The course is delivered through hands-on labs, administration and tuning exercises, backup and recovery simulations, security hardening practice, and troubleshooting case studies. Participants leave with a database administration checklist, a backup and recovery plan template, a performance tuning checklist, a database security hardening checklist, and a maintenance and monitoring plan template. The course focuses on transferable database administration skills across platforms and is not an official vendor certification program.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role of databases and the database administrator in reliable, secure information systems on Day 1.
  • Explain relational database and database management system fundamentals and core database architecture, including storage, memory, processes, and logging.
  • Install, configure, and manage database instances and parameters.
  • Apply data modeling and schema design principles, including normalization and constraints.
  • Use SQL effectively for administration, including managing users, objects, and permissions.
  • Design and manage indexes and optimize queries for performance.
  • Monitor database performance and diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks.
  • Design and implement backup and recovery strategies and perform restores.
  • Apply high availability and disaster recovery approaches, including replication and clustering concepts.
  • Secure databases through authentication, authorization, roles, privileges, encryption, auditing, and protection against common threats.
  • Perform routine maintenance, patching, upgrades, data migration, capacity planning, and automation.
  • Apply monitoring and alerting, evaluate NoSQL and cloud and managed database services, and apply database governance and compliance considerations by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for database administrators, junior and aspiring DBAs, database developers, data engineers, and system administrators who manage or support databases. It is also relevant for application developers who want to understand database administration, IT operations and infrastructure professionals, data analysts seeking deeper database knowledge, and IT professionals moving into database roles. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, and public authorities, banks, insurance companies, and financial institutions, oil and gas, energy, and utility companies, telecommunications and technology providers, healthcare and education institutions, and large private organizations. Participants should have basic IT knowledge and familiarity with SQL is helpful but not required.
