Course Overview

This practitioner course equips data stewards, data quality analysts and data office teams with the hands-on techniques needed to find, measure and fix data quality problems in operational, ERP and reporting systems. Rather than a management view of data quality or a single module within a wider data management curriculum, it works through the full practitioner cycle: profiling data, writing and testing data quality rules, building scorecards and KPIs, managing issues, analyzing root causes and cleansing data. Participants start by scoping work around critical data elements and profiling real datasets to reveal null values, invalid formats, outliers, duplicates and broken relationships between tables. They then translate business requirements into precise, testable rules covering completeness, validity, consistency, uniqueness, timeliness and accuracy, and learn to manage those rules in a controlled catalogue with clear owners. The course also covers how to turn rule results into scorecards, thresholds and trend KPIs that business owners understand, how to log and prioritize data quality issues, and how to trace defects upstream using lineage and process analysis so that the source is corrected, not only the data. Reference is made to recognized frameworks such as the ISO/IEC 25012 data quality model and to national data management standards issued by authorities such as the National Data Management Office in Saudi Arabia. Through guided exercises on sample customer, vendor, asset and financial datasets, participants build a complete working toolkit: a profiling report, a tested rule set, a scorecard, an issue log and a remediation plan they can apply directly in their own organizations.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Identify and document critical data elements for a business process.
  • Profile datasets to detect missing, invalid, duplicate and inconsistent values.
  • Translate business requirements into precise, testable data quality rules.
  • Test, version and maintain rules in a controlled rule catalogue.
  • Decide where rules should run: at data entry, in pipelines or in reporting.
  • Set thresholds and tolerances with data owners for each critical rule.
  • Design data quality scorecards and trend KPIs by domain and dimension.
  • Log, classify and prioritize data quality issues by business impact.
  • Apply structured root-cause analysis techniques to recurring data defects.
  • Plan and execute standardization, matching, deduplication and cleansing safely.
  • Embed preventive controls and stewardship routines to sustain improvement.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for data stewards, data quality analysts, data governance officers, business intelligence developers and analysts, ERP and master data specialists, data engineers and members of data office teams who work directly with data and are responsible for measuring and improving its quality. It is particularly relevant to professionals in government entities and ministries, banks and financial institutions, oil and gas and energy companies, telecommunications, utilities, healthcare administration and other large organizations running ERP, customer, asset or financial data platforms. The programme will benefit most those who are building or strengthening a data quality function, preparing for national data management assessments, or leading data migration and master data initiatives.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Select and document the critical data elements that matter most to the business.
  • Produce a profiling report that quantifies defects in a real dataset.
  • Write clear, testable data quality rules across all core dimensions.
  • Maintain a rule catalogue with owners, versions and test evidence.
  • Agree realistic thresholds and tolerances with data owners.
  • Build scorecards and KPIs that show quality trends by domain.
  • Estimate the business cost of poor data quality.
  • Run an issue register with severity, ownership and service levels.
  • Use five whys, fishbone and Pareto analysis to isolate root causes.
  • Plan safe cleansing, matching and deduplication with rollback options.
  • Embed preventive controls at the point of data entry.
  • Present a practical remediation plan to stewards and data owners.

Course Outline

Day 1

Critical Data Elements and Data Profiling

  • Scoping data quality work around critical data elements.
  • Applying quality dimensions as measurable characteristics.
  • Using business glossaries, metadata and lineage for context.
  • Column profiling: nulls, distinct values, ranges and patterns.
  • Cross-column and cross-table dependency analysis.
  • Detecting orphan records and referential integrity breaks.
  • Documenting profiling findings for business review.
  • Practical application: Profiling a sample customer and vendor dataset and recording the anomalies found.
Day 2

Writing and Testing Data Quality Rules

  • Turning business requirements into precise rule statements.
  • Completeness, validity, format, range and reference checks.
  • Consistency, uniqueness and cross-system reconciliation rules.
  • Expressing rules as plain-language logic and SQL conditions.
  • Testing rules against known good and bad records.
  • Managing a rule catalogue with owners and versions.
  • Placing rules at entry, in pipelines or in reporting layers.
  • Practical application: Writing and testing a rule set for one critical data domain.
Day 3

Measurement, Scorecards and Data Quality KPIs

  • Scoring records, attributes and datasets against rules.
  • Setting thresholds and tolerances with data owners.
  • Designing scorecards by data domain and dimension.
  • Choosing KPIs that track trends rather than snapshots.
  • Estimating the cost of poor data quality.
  • Scheduling checks and alerting on threshold breaches.
  • Reporting results to stewards, owners and the data office.
  • Practical application: Building a scorecard and KPI set from the rule results of Day 2.
Day 4

Issue Management and Root-Cause Analysis

  • Logging data quality issues in a consistent register.
  • Classifying severity, business impact and priority.
  • Assigning ownership and resolution service levels.
  • Root-cause techniques: five whys, fishbone and Pareto analysis.
  • Tracing defects upstream through lineage and process maps.
  • Correcting the source versus correcting the data.
  • Tracking issues to closure and preventing recurrence.
  • Practical application: Running a root-cause analysis on a recurring defect and drafting the corrective action.
Day 5

Data Cleansing, Matching and Sustained Remediation

  • Planning cleansing with impact assessment and rollback.
  • Standardizing names, addresses, codes and units.
  • Matching, deduplication and survivorship rules.
  • Bulk corrections in ERP systems and data migrations.
  • Embedding preventive controls at the point of entry.
  • Building a remediation plan with owners and milestones.
  • Sustaining improvement through stewardship routines.
  • Practical application: Presenting a data quality improvement plan covering rules, scorecard, issue log and remediation actions.
