Course Overview

This advanced practical course develops the capabilities required to use Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) as an effective mechanism for identifying, evaluating, and treating privacy risks before and during the implementation of projects, systems, and processes involving personal data. It emphasizes a proactive approach that integrates privacy into planning, design, implementation, and change management. The programme provides a structured approach to conducting DPIAs, from defining scope and identifying processing activities to assessing necessity and proportionality, evaluating privacy risks, selecting appropriate controls, documenting decisions, and monitoring mitigation actions. It also focuses on Privacy by Design and its application across systems, services, processes, and emerging technologies. Participants examine data minimization, purpose limitation, access management, retention, security, transparency, and accountability as design considerations that should be addressed from the earliest stages of development. Through practical scenarios and case-based exercises, participants will develop complete DPIAs, analyse processing activities, evaluate design alternatives, define privacy controls, document residual risks, and establish review mechanisms that support defensible and auditable privacy decisions.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyse the purpose, scope, and key requirements of Data Protection Impact Assessments.
  • Identify processing activities that require or warrant a DPIA.
  • Map data flows and personal data lifecycles within the assessment scope.
  • Evaluate the necessity and proportionality of proposed personal data processing.
  • Identify privacy risks and potential impacts on individuals.
  • Apply structured methodologies to assess risk likelihood and severity.
  • Design appropriate controls to reduce privacy risks to acceptable levels.
  • Apply Privacy by Design principles across projects, systems, and services.
  • Integrate data minimization, retention, access, security, and transparency into solution design.
  • Evaluate technical and operational alternatives from a privacy perspective.
  • Prepare and document comprehensive, reviewable DPIAs.
  • Establish mechanisms for monitoring controls and updating assessments when circumstances change.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for Data Protection Officers, Privacy Officers, Privacy Programme Managers, Data Governance and Compliance Professionals, Risk Managers, Legal and Regulatory Specialists, and Information Security Professionals. It is also suitable for Enterprise Architects, Solution Architects, Data Architects, IT Managers, Project Managers, Business Analysts, Digital Service Designers, Product Teams, and System Development Professionals involved in designing or implementing solutions that process personal data. The programme is particularly relevant to organizations seeking to embed privacy throughout the project and system lifecycle or establish a consistent approach to assessing privacy risks before introducing new processes, systems, technologies, or services.

Learning Outcomes

  • Determine when a DPIA is required or appropriate.
  • Define DPIA scope, objectives, stakeholders, and assessment boundaries.
  • Document personal data processing activities and data flows.
  • Assess the necessity and proportionality of proposed processing.
  • Identify privacy risks and potential impacts on individuals.
  • Analyse and prioritize privacy risks according to likelihood and severity.
  • Select appropriate controls and mitigation measures.
  • Apply Privacy by Design principles to systems, services, and business processes.
  • Evaluate technical and design options against privacy requirements.
  • Produce comprehensive and evidence-based DPIA documentation.
  • Define stakeholder responsibilities and monitor mitigation actions.
  • Review and update DPIAs when processing activities, technologies, or risks materially change.
