Course Overview

The Data Analytics for Internal Audit Training Course equips internal auditors, audit supervisors, and IT and financial auditors with the practical skills needed to use data throughout the audit lifecycle, from risk assessment and planning to fieldwork, reporting, and follow-up. Instead of drawing small samples and extrapolating, participants learn to test entire populations of transactions, isolate genuine exceptions, and give management and the audit committee evidence-based assurance on the risks that matter most. Government entities, ministries, banks, oil and gas companies, and large corporations now run their operations on enterprise resource planning, core banking, and payroll systems that record every transaction. Audit functions that still rely mainly on manual sampling cover only a fraction of that activity and can miss duplicate payments, fictitious vendors, control overrides, and unusual journal entries. Audit analytics closes this gap and frees auditors to focus their judgment on the exceptions that need investigation. The course covers computer-assisted audit techniques, data-driven risk assessment, and the design of analytic tests linked to specific risks and controls. Participants learn to request, extract, and validate data, confirm completeness and accuracy through record counts, control totals, and reconciliations, and apply stratification, aging, gap and duplicate detection, matching, Benford's Law, and outlier analysis. The program then applies these techniques to procure-to-pay, payroll, revenue, journal entries, user access and segregation of duties, and banking transactions, before moving to continuous auditing, continuous monitoring, and the governance of an analytics program. The course is delivered through hands-on exercises on realistic case datasets, analytic test design workshops, exception review sessions, and reporting practice using audit analytics and data tools. Participants leave with an analytics test library for common risks, a data request and validation checklist, an exception triage worksheet, and a roadmap for embedding analytics in their audit function.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain how data analytics strengthens each stage of the audit lifecycle compared with traditional sampling on Day 1.
  • Apply computer-assisted audit techniques and full-population testing to obtain sufficient, relevant, and reliable audit evidence.
  • Use data-driven risk assessment to prioritize audit areas and link analytic objectives to risks and controls.
  • Plan data requests, extraction, and chain of custody for enterprise, banking, and payroll systems.
  • Validate data completeness and accuracy through record counts, control totals, and reconciliation to the general ledger.
  • Perform stratification, aging, gap and duplicate detection, matching, Benford's Law, and outlier analysis on audit datasets.
  • Design analytic tests for procure-to-pay, payroll, revenue, journal entries, user access, and banking transactions.
  • Interpret exceptions, filter out false positives, and convert results into well-supported audit findings.
  • Communicate analytic results through clear visualizations, dashboards, and reproducible documentation.
  • Design a well-governed continuous auditing and monitoring program by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for internal auditors, audit seniors and supervisors, IT auditors, financial auditors, and audit managers who want to move from sample-based testing to data-driven assurance. It is also relevant for professionals in ministries, government entities, audit bureaus, central banks, commercial and Islamic banks, insurance companies, oil and gas and utility companies, and large private groups and family businesses. Risk, compliance, fraud examination, and internal control professionals, finance and systems managers who own key transactional data, and audit analytics specialists building a data-driven audit capability will benefit most from the course's practical tests and exercises.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain where data analytics adds the most value in the internal audit lifecycle.
  • Select computer-assisted audit techniques and full-population tests suited to each audit objective.
  • Prioritize audit areas using data-driven risk indicators.
  • Request, extract, and validate audit data with confidence in its completeness and accuracy.
  • Apply core analytic techniques, including stratification, duplicate and gap tests, matching, and Benford's Law.
  • Build analytic tests for payments, payroll, journal entries, user access, and banking transactions.
  • Investigate exceptions efficiently and filter out false positives.
  • Turn analytic results into well-supported findings and practical recommendations.
  • Present results clearly through visualizations and dashboards.
  • Develop a roadmap for continuous auditing and a well-governed analytics program in their audit function.

Course Outline

Course Outline:

Day 1

Foundations of Audit Analytics

  • Data analytics across the audit lifecycle
  • Computer-assisted audit techniques and the move from sampling to full-population testing
  • Audit evidence requirements, professional judgment, and the limits of analytics
  • Data-driven risk assessment and defining analytic objectives from risks and controls
  • Practical application: participants map analytic opportunities onto a case study audit plan and select priority tests
Day 2

Data Acquisition, Preparation, and Integrity

  • Data structures, tables, and key fields in enterprise, banking, and payroll systems
  • Writing data requests, extraction methods, and chain of custody
  • Completeness and accuracy checks: record counts, control totals, and reconciliation to the general ledger
  • Cleansing and joining datasets with confidentiality and privacy safeguards
  • Practical application: participants prepare a data request and validate an extracted dataset against source totals
Day 3

Core Analytic Techniques

  • Summarization, stratification, and aging analysis
  • Gap, duplicate, and fuzzy matching tests
  • Cross-matching master files, such as vendor and employee records
  • Benford's Law, trend analysis, and outlier detection
  • Practical application: participants run core analytic tests on a case dataset and document exceptions
Day 4

Analytic Tests for Common Risk Areas

  • Procure-to-pay: duplicate payments, split purchases, and vendor master data anomalies
  • Payroll: ghost employees, unauthorized changes, and payments after termination
  • Journal entry testing: manual, backdated, weekend, round-amount, and unusual-user entries
  • User access, segregation of duties conflicts, and dormant account activity in banking
  • Practical application: participants build a test library for one risk area and triage the exceptions
Day 5

Continuous Auditing, Reporting, and Analytics Governance

  • Continuous auditing versus continuous monitoring by management
  • Interpreting exceptions, reducing false positives, and converting results into audit findings
  • Visualization, dashboards, and reporting results to the audit committee
  • Documentation, reproducibility, quality review, and an analytics program roadmap
  • Final workshop: participants design a continuous auditing routine for a high-risk process and present their results
