The Damage Mechanisms in Refineries (API 571) Training Course equips inspection, integrity, corrosion, materials, and process engineers with a practical understanding of the damage mechanisms that affect fixed equipment in refineries and petrochemical plants, and how to recognize, predict, monitor, and prevent them. Pressure vessels, piping, heat exchangers, fired heaters, and storage tanks in refining units are exposed to high temperatures, pressures, corrosive process streams, and cyclic conditions that cause thinning, cracking, embrittlement, and metallurgical degradation. Understanding which damage mechanisms are active, where they occur, and what conditions drive them is the foundation of effective inspection planning, risk-based inspection, integrity operating windows, and fitness-for-service assessment. The course is structured around API Recommended Practice 571 and its classification of damage mechanisms. Participants learn mechanical and metallurgical failure mechanisms such as brittle fracture, creep, thermal and mechanical fatigue, embrittlement, and erosion; uniform and localized loss of thickness, including corrosion under insulation, cooling water, carbon dioxide, and microbiologically influenced corrosion; high-temperature corrosion, including oxidation, sulfidation, carburization, and metal dusting; environment-assisted cracking, including chloride, caustic, amine, carbonate, and polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement; and refining-specific mechanisms, including wet hydrogen sulfide damage, high-temperature hydrogen attack, naphthenic acid corrosion, and ammonium chloride, ammonium bisulfide, sour water, sulfuric acid, and hydrofluoric acid corrosion. The program then applies this knowledge to major refinery process units, corrosion loops, inspection technique selection, risk-based inspection, integrity operating windows, and mitigation. The course is delivered through damage mechanism case studies, failure photographs and examples, process unit corrosion loop workshops, and inspection planning exercises. Participants leave with a damage mechanism quick reference guide, a process unit damage mechanism matrix, a corrosion loop development template, an inspection technique selection guide, and an integrity operating window checklist. This course builds practical knowledge of damage mechanisms and is not an official API certification program.
