Course Overview

The Cybersecurity for ATM & CNS Systems Training Course equips air navigation service provider engineers, air traffic management and CNS technical staff, security professionals, and aviation safety and technical managers with the knowledge and practical tools needed to protect the air traffic management and communication, navigation, and surveillance systems that underpin safe air navigation from cyber threats. These systems were historically isolated and proprietary, but modernization, digitalization, system-wide information management, increased connectivity, and the use of commercial technologies have expanded their exposure to cyber risk. A successful attack on air traffic management or CNS systems could degrade safety-critical services, disrupt operations, and erode trust, which is why cybersecurity has become a core element of air navigation safety and resilience alongside traditional safety management. The course covers cybersecurity for air traffic management and CNS systems from fundamentals to governance and resilience, bridging the aviation safety and cybersecurity domains. Participants learn the cyber threat landscape for aviation and air navigation, the characteristics and vulnerabilities of operational technology and air traffic management and CNS systems, and the relationship between safety and security. The program then addresses the regulatory and standards context for aviation cybersecurity, security governance and risk management for operational systems, and securing specific domains including communication systems and data links, navigation and global navigation satellite systems including interference, jamming, and spoofing, surveillance systems, and system-wide information management and digital data sharing. Participants also examine network segmentation and architecture, access control and identity management, secure configuration, patching and supply chain security for operational systems, monitoring, detection, and security operations for air navigation environments, incident response and coordination with safety and operations, business continuity and resilience, and building a security culture and capability. Safety-critical constraints, such as the need to maintain availability and avoid disrupting live operations, are emphasized throughout. The course is delivered through threat and vulnerability analysis, architecture and segmentation workshops, risk assessment exercises, and incident response tabletop scenarios tailored to air navigation. Participants leave with an air navigation cyber threat and risk assessment template, a security controls checklist for air traffic management and CNS systems, a network segmentation and architecture reference, an incident response playbook outline, and a cybersecurity improvement plan template. This course addresses defensive cybersecurity, governance, and resilience and does not provide offensive security or exploitation content.
