Course Overview

The Crude Oil Treatment & Dehydration Training Course equips production, process, and operations professionals with the practical knowledge needed to treat, dehydrate, desalt, and stabilize crude oil so that it consistently meets pipeline, export, and refinery specifications at the lowest practical cost. As fields mature, water cuts rise, emulsions become more stable, and salt, solids, and heavy components increase, making crude oil treatment more challenging. Off-specification crude can lead to rejected cargoes, penalties, corrosion and fouling downstream, loss of revenue, and production constraints. The course covers crude oil treatment from well fluids to specification crude. Participants learn crude oil properties and specifications, including water and sediment content, salt content, vapor pressure, and hydrogen sulfide, and the science of emulsion formation and stability. The program then addresses treatment methods and equipment, including free water knockouts, gravity separation, heater-treaters, wash and settling tanks, chemical demulsification, electrostatic dehydrators and desalters, and crude stabilization and sweetening. Participants also examine process control, sampling and laboratory testing, chemical selection and dosing optimization, troubleshooting of common upsets such as rag layers, carryover, and high salt, heavy oil treatment challenges, interfaces with produced water treatment and custody transfer, energy optimization, and safety considerations. The course is delivered through process schematics, bottle test demonstrations, case studies, and troubleshooting and optimization exercises. Participants leave with a crude oil specification and testing guide, a treatment method selection guide, a demulsifier selection and bottle test procedure, a troubleshooting checklist, and a treatment optimization plan template.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze crude oil properties and pipeline, export, and refinery specifications, including water and sediment, salt content, vapor pressure, and hydrogen sulfide, on Day 1.
  • Explain how water-in-oil emulsions form and the factors that affect emulsion stability, including natural surfactants, asphaltenes, solids, shear, and temperature.
  • Evaluate crude oil treatment methods, including gravity separation, heating, chemical demulsification, and electrostatic coalescence.
  • Describe the design and operation of free water knockouts, heater-treaters, and wash and settling tanks.
  • Apply the principles and operation of electrostatic dehydrators and single and two-stage desalting systems, including wash water and mixing.
  • Select demulsifiers and optimize chemical dosing using bottle tests and field trials.
  • Explain crude oil stabilization and sweetening to control vapor pressure and hydrogen sulfide content.
  • Apply sampling and laboratory testing methods for water and sediment, water content, and salt content to monitor treatment performance.
  • Apply process control strategies, including interface level control, temperature control, and electrostatic grid control.
  • Troubleshoot common treatment problems, including stable emulsions, rag layers, water carryover, oil in water, and high salt content.
  • Address heavy oil treatment challenges and manage interfaces with produced water treatment and custody transfer.
  • Optimize crude oil treatment for performance, energy use, chemical cost, and safety and develop a treatment improvement plan by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for production engineers, process engineers, operations engineers, and production supervisors responsible for crude oil treatment facilities. It is also relevant for control room and field operators, production chemists and chemical treatment specialists, laboratory personnel, facilities engineers, and maintenance and instrumentation personnel supporting treatment systems. It is particularly valuable for professionals in oil and gas production companies operating onshore and offshore processing facilities, gathering centers, and gas-oil separation plants; in pipeline and export terminal operators; in refineries receiving crude oil; in oilfield chemical suppliers; and in engineering contractors designing treatment facilities.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the key crude oil specifications and why they matter.
  • Describe how emulsions form and what makes them difficult to break.
  • Select appropriate treatment methods for different crude types and water cuts.
  • Operate and optimize heater-treaters and settling tanks.
  • Operate electrostatic dehydrators and desalters effectively.
  • Select demulsifiers and optimize chemical dosing.
  • Explain how crude is stabilized to meet vapor pressure and hydrogen sulfide limits.
  • Interpret laboratory results to monitor treatment performance.
  • Control interfaces, temperatures, and electrical systems for stable operation.
  • Diagnose and correct common treatment upsets.
  • Manage heavy crude and produced water interface challenges.
  • Improve treatment efficiency while reducing energy and chemical costs.
