Course Overview

This advanced practical course develops the capabilities required to manage Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) processes effectively and ensure that quality problems are addressed at their underlying causes rather than through temporary fixes. It focuses on building a disciplined CAPA system that connects problem identification, investigation, corrective action, effectiveness verification, and continuous improvement. The programme examines how CAPA can be triggered by nonconformities, audit findings, customer complaints, deviations, incidents, recurring defects, risk assessments, and performance trends. Participants will learn how to assess issues, determine appropriate actions, investigate root causes, and establish controls that prevent recurrence or potential occurrence. Practical exercises emphasize evidence-based investigation, action planning, risk prioritization, effectiveness checks, documentation, ownership, and management oversight. Participants will also examine how CAPA performance can be measured and integrated with quality management and continuous improvement systems.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyse the purpose, principles, and structure of an effective CAPA management system.
  • Identify events and quality signals that require corrective or preventive action.
  • Evaluate problems and risks to determine appropriate CAPA priorities.
  • Develop clear problem statements supported by objective evidence.
  • Apply structured root cause analysis to identify underlying causes.
  • Distinguish immediate corrections, corrective actions, and preventive actions.
  • Develop risk-based corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Establish clear responsibilities, timelines, and implementation controls.
  • Evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of proposed CAPA actions.
  • Design effective methods for verifying action effectiveness and preventing recurrence.
  • Develop CAPA documentation, reporting, monitoring, and escalation mechanisms.
  • Integrate CAPA with audits, nonconformities, risk management, quality systems, and continuous improvement.

Who Should Attend
