Course Overview

The Contract Management Training Course equips professionals with a structured, end-to-end approach to managing contracts after award so that the expected outcomes, value, and benefits are actually delivered. In government entities, ministries, banks, healthcare systems, energy and utility companies, manufacturing, construction, and service organizations, and large corporations, a significant proportion of spending flows through contracts for goods, services, works, technology, and outsourcing. Signing a good contract is only the beginning; value is protected or lost in how the contract is mobilized, monitored, administered, changed, and closed. Many organizations invest heavily in tendering and negotiation but give far less attention to what happens next. Contract ownership may be unclear, obligations may not be tracked, supplier performance may be monitored informally or only when problems arise, variations may be agreed verbally without proper authorization, and invoices may be paid without verifying delivery against contract terms. Records may be incomplete, risks may not be reviewed, renewal dates may be missed, and contracts may be closed without capturing lessons learned. These gaps lead to value leakage, cost overruns, disputes, audit findings, and lost opportunities for improvement. This course provides a practical framework for managing contracts across their full lifecycle. Participants learn the principles and objectives of contract management, the roles of contract owners, contract managers, end users, suppliers, and oversight functions, and how to segment contracts so that management effort matches value, risk, and complexity. The program covers contract strategy and preparation for award, contract handover, mobilization, and kickoff, developing a contract management plan and obligations register, performance management using service levels and KPIs, payment and invoice management, change and variation control, contract risk management, supplier relationship management, issue resolution and escalation, and the basics of managing claims and disputes. It also addresses records management, compliance and audit readiness, contract extensions, renewals and re-procurement planning, contract closeout and lessons learned, contract management maturity, and the use of contract lifecycle management systems, with attention to value for money, transparency, and accountability in public sector environments. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with case studies, exercises based on realistic contracts, and group workshops. Participants leave with a contract segmentation model, a contract management plan template, an obligations register, a performance review agenda, a change control procedure, a contract risk register, a contract closeout checklist, and an improvement plan for contract management in their organization.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the purpose, scope, and value of effective contract management in delivering outcomes and value for money on Day 1.
  • Evaluate the participant's current contract management practices and identify priority gaps and sources of value leakage.
  • Define the roles and responsibilities of contract owners, contract managers, end users, suppliers, finance, legal, and oversight functions.
  • Apply contract segmentation to align contract management effort with contract value, risk, complexity, and criticality.
  • Implement effective contract handover, mobilization, and kickoff practices that establish clear expectations from the start.
  • Develop a contract management plan and obligations register that capture key deliverables, milestones, responsibilities, and deadlines.
  • Apply performance management practices using service levels, KPIs, performance reviews, and remedies.
  • Implement payment and invoice verification processes that ensure payments match contract terms and verified delivery.
  • Apply formal change and variation control procedures that protect scope, cost, and authority.
  • Develop contract risk registers and apply proactive risk and issue management, including escalation and early handling of claims.
  • Implement records management, compliance, and audit readiness practices, and plan for extensions, renewals, and re-procurement.
  • Design a contract closeout process and an improvement plan for contract management in the participant's organization by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for contract managers, contracts administrators, procurement and category managers, project managers, and business and service owners responsible for managing contracts with suppliers, contractors, consultants, and service providers. It is also relevant for finance professionals responsible for contract payments, legal support staff, and technical and operational staff who monitor supplier delivery and performance. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries and government entities managing public contracts for goods, services, works, and outsourcing; in banks and financial institutions managing technology, outsourcing, facility, and professional service contracts; in healthcare systems managing supply, equipment maintenance, and service contracts; and in energy, utilities, manufacturing, construction, and service organizations managing operational, maintenance, and project contracts. Internal auditors, compliance officers, and senior managers who oversee contract portfolios and approve variations, extensions, and renewals will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how effective contract management protects value, reduces risk, and supports delivery.
  • Clarify roles and responsibilities for managing each contract.
  • Classify contracts and apply an appropriate level of management effort to each.
  • Plan and conduct an effective contract handover and kickoff meeting.
  • Prepare a contract management plan and obligations register for a real contract.
  • Monitor supplier performance against service levels and KPIs and apply agreed remedies.
  • Verify invoices against contract terms and delivery evidence before approval.

  • Identify, assess, and manage contract risks and issues before they escalate.
