Course Overview

The Confined Space Entry & Safety Training Course equips supervisors, entry teams, attendants, gas testers, HSE professionals, and permit issuers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to identify confined spaces, assess and control their hazards, plan and authorize safe entry, and respond effectively to emergencies. Confined spaces such as tanks, vessels, columns, reactors, boilers, silos, pits, sewers, manholes, ducts, and pipelines are found throughout oil and gas, petrochemical, power, water and wastewater, utilities, construction, and industrial facilities. Incidents in confined spaces are frequently fatal and often involve multiple victims, including untrained would-be rescuers, because hazards such as oxygen deficiency, toxic and flammable atmospheres, and engulfment can be invisible and act within seconds. The course covers confined space safety from identification to rescue, informed by recognized international regulations and industry good practice. Participants learn how to identify and register confined spaces, recognize atmospheric and physical hazards, apply the hierarchy of controls to avoid entry where possible, and conduct confined space risk assessments. The program then addresses entry permits and their integration with permit-to-work systems, roles and responsibilities of entrants, attendants, entry supervisors, gas testers, and rescue teams, isolation of process, mechanical, and electrical energy, cleaning, purging, and ventilation, and atmospheric testing sequences, gas detector calibration and bump testing, and continuous monitoring. Participants also examine respiratory protection and personal protective equipment, communication, lighting and electrical equipment, hot work inside confined spaces, entry into inert atmospheres, rescue planning and non-entry retrieval systems, emergency response, contractor control, and auditing of confined space programs. The course is delivered through major incident case studies, hazard identification exercises, permit and gas testing workshops, rescue planning exercises, and demonstrations of gas detection and retrieval equipment. Participants leave with a confined space identification and register template, a confined space risk assessment template, an entry permit and checklist, a gas testing and monitoring procedure, and a confined space rescue plan template.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the hazards of confined spaces and the causes of confined space fatalities, including rescuer deaths, drawing lessons from major incidents on Day 1.
  • Apply recognized international regulations and industry good practice for confined space entry.
  • Identify, classify, register, and sign confined spaces in the workplace.
  • Recognize atmospheric hazards, including oxygen deficiency and enrichment, flammable and toxic atmospheres, and physical hazards, including engulfment, entrapment, heat, mechanical, and electrical hazards.
  • Apply the hierarchy of controls to avoid entry where possible and conduct confined space risk assessments.
  • Plan and authorize entry using confined space entry permits integrated with permit-to-work systems.
  • Define the roles, responsibilities, and competence of entrants, attendants, entry supervisors, gas testers, and rescue teams.
  • Apply isolation of process, mechanical, and electrical energy, including blinding, double block and bleed, and lockout and tagout.
  • Apply cleaning, purging, and ventilation methods and manage the special risks of inert atmosphere entry.
  • Conduct atmospheric testing in the correct sequence, verify gas detectors through calibration and bump testing, and apply continuous monitoring.
  • Select respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, communication, lighting, and electrical equipment and control hot work inside confined spaces.
  • Develop confined space rescue plans, including non-entry retrieval, and manage emergency response, contractor control, and program audits by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for entry supervisors, confined space entrants and attendants, gas testers, permit issuers and receivers, and operations and maintenance supervisors whose work involves confined space entry. It is also relevant for HSE professionals, emergency response and rescue team members, turnaround and shutdown coordinators, contractor supervisors, and engineers who plan work inside vessels, tanks, and other confined spaces. It is particularly valuable for professionals in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, fertilizer, and chemical plants, gas processing and LNG facilities, power generation, water, wastewater, and desalination plants, utilities and municipal services, shipyards and marine operations, construction and infrastructure projects, and maintenance, cleaning, and inspection contractors.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain why confined spaces are so dangerous and how fatalities occur.
  • Apply relevant regulations and good practice to confined space work.
  • Identify and register confined spaces correctly.
  • Recognize atmospheric and physical hazards before entry.
  • Avoid unnecessary entry and assess risks when entry is required.
  • Prepare, issue, and control confined space entry permits.
  • Perform their role in confined space entry competently.
  • Isolate confined spaces safely from all energy sources.
  • Clean, purge, and ventilate confined spaces effectively.
  • Test and monitor atmospheres correctly and verify gas detectors.
  • Select appropriate respiratory protection and equipment for entry.
  • Plan and execute safe rescue without endangering rescuers.
