Course Overview

The Coaching & Mentoring for Employee Development Training Course equips managers, HR professionals, and experienced specialists with the practical skills to develop people through structured, one-to-one development conversations. In government entities, ministries, banks, oil and gas companies, and large corporations, much of the most valuable learning happens on the job, through guidance from managers and experienced colleagues rather than in the classroom. Coaching and mentoring turn this everyday interaction into a deliberate development process that builds capability, confidence, engagement, and readiness for future roles. Coaching and mentoring are often discussed but inconsistently practiced. Managers may default to giving instructions rather than developing thinking, mentoring relationships may lack clear goals and structure, and feedback may be avoided or delivered in ways that reduce motivation. Formal mentoring programs are sometimes launched without proper matching, preparation, or follow-up, and quickly lose momentum. This course addresses these challenges by building both the individual skills and the organizational structures that make coaching and mentoring effective. Participants learn the distinction between coaching, mentoring, training, and counseling, and when each approach is most appropriate. They practice core skills including active listening, powerful questioning, building trust, giving and receiving feedback, and goal setting, using recognized models such as the GROW coaching model. The program also covers coaching for performance improvement and career growth, designing and managing mentoring programs, supporting knowledge transfer and succession, ethical and confidentiality considerations, and building a coaching culture within teams and organizations. The course is highly practical, with a significant portion of time dedicated to structured practice sessions with observation and feedback. Participants leave with a coaching conversation framework, a mentoring agreement template, a mentoring program design outline, and a personal plan for applying coaching and mentoring with their teams.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the differences between coaching, mentoring, training, and counseling and select the most appropriate approach for different development situations on Day 1.
  • Apply the GROW model to structure coaching conversations focused on clear goals and actionable outcomes.
  • Strengthen active listening and powerful questioning skills through observed practice sessions with structured feedback.
  • Develop the ability to build trust, rapport, and psychological safety in one-to-one development relationships.
  • Apply structured feedback models to deliver constructive and motivating feedback on performance and behavior.
  • Implement coaching approaches to address performance gaps, develop new skills, and support employees through change.
  • Design a mentoring relationship framework, including goals, roles, agreements, meeting structure, and review points.
  • Develop a mentoring program outline covering objectives, participant selection, matching, preparation, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Align coaching and mentoring activities with individual development plans, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Assess ethical, confidentiality, and boundary considerations in coaching and mentoring relationships.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of coaching and mentoring using practical indicators at individual and organizational levels.
  • Design a personal coaching and mentoring action plan for application with the participant's team by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for managers, supervisors, team leaders, and department heads who are responsible for developing their teams and improving individual performance. It is also highly relevant for HR business partners, learning and development specialists, talent management professionals, and internal coaches who design or support coaching and mentoring initiatives, as well as experienced specialists and senior employees who are, or will become, mentors to newer colleagues. It is particularly valuable for leaders in ministries and government entities supporting national talent and localization programs, graduate and leadership development schemes, and knowledge transfer from experienced staff; in banks and financial institutions developing high-potential employees, relationship managers, and future leaders; and in oil and gas and industrial organizations where experienced engineers, operators, and technical experts play a critical role in developing new talent and preserving critical knowledge. Senior executives who wish to build a coaching culture and program owners responsible for mentoring and succession initiatives will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Choose the most effective development approach, whether coaching, mentoring, instruction, or referral, for a given situation.
