Course Overview

The CNS Systems for Air Navigation Training Course equips air navigation service provider engineers and technicians, civil aviation authority specialists, and aviation technical professionals with the knowledge and practical understanding needed to understand, operate, maintain, and plan the communication, navigation, and surveillance systems that form the technical backbone of air navigation services. Communication, navigation, and surveillance systems enable controllers and pilots to communicate, aircraft to navigate accurately, and air traffic to be monitored safely. As aviation modernizes, these systems are evolving from legacy ground-based technologies toward satellite-based navigation, digital data communication, and advanced surveillance, and technical professionals must understand both current systems and the transition to future infrastructure. The course covers communication, navigation, and surveillance systems from fundamentals to modernization. Participants learn the role of these systems within air navigation services and the modernization framework, and radio and signal fundamentals. In communication, participants cover aeronautical mobile and fixed services, very high frequency and high frequency voice communication, controller-pilot data link communication, the aeronautical telecommunication network, and aeronautical message handling. In navigation, participants cover conventional navigation aids such as non-directional beacons, VOR, DME, and instrument landing systems, global navigation satellite systems and augmentation, and the shift to performance-based navigation. In surveillance, participants cover primary and secondary surveillance radar, automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast and contract, multilateration, and data fusion. The program also addresses system-wide information management and digital data sharing, spectrum management and interference, system performance, availability, integrity, and redundancy, maintenance, monitoring, and safety and security of communication, navigation, and surveillance systems, and planning the transition to future communication, navigation, and surveillance infrastructure. The course is delivered through system overviews, signal and performance analysis exercises, surveillance and navigation case studies, and modernization planning workshops. Participants leave with a communication, navigation, and surveillance systems reference, a navigation aids and surveillance comparison guide, a system performance and availability checklist, a spectrum and interference considerations guide, and a communication, navigation, and surveillance modernization planning template. This course provides technical and planning-level knowledge and is not a system-specific vendor maintenance certification program.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role of communication, navigation, and surveillance systems as the backbone of air navigation services on Day 1.
  • Explain radio and signal fundamentals relevant to communication, navigation, and surveillance.
  • Describe aeronautical communication systems, including very high frequency and high frequency voice and controller-pilot data link communication.
  • Explain the aeronautical telecommunication network and message handling.
  • Describe conventional navigation aids, including non-directional beacons, VOR, DME, and instrument landing systems.
  • Explain global navigation satellite systems, augmentation, and the shift to performance-based navigation.
  • Describe surveillance systems, including primary and secondary radar, automatic dependent surveillance, multilateration, and data fusion.
  • Explain system-wide information management and digital data sharing.
  • Apply spectrum management and address interference affecting communication, navigation, and surveillance systems.
  • Assess system performance, availability, integrity, and redundancy.
  • Apply maintenance, monitoring, and safety and security practices for communication, navigation, and surveillance systems.
  • Plan the transition to future communication, navigation, and surveillance infrastructure by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for communication, navigation, and surveillance engineers and technicians, air navigation service provider technical and engineering staff, and civil aviation authority technical and safety specialists. It is also relevant for air traffic management professionals who work with these systems, project and planning engineers, spectrum and frequency management staff, and technical professionals moving into communication, navigation, and surveillance roles. It is particularly valuable for professionals in air navigation service providers, civil aviation authorities and regulators, airport operators, defense and military aviation organizations, and aviation technology providers, integrators, and consultancies. This course provides technical and planning knowledge and does not by itself qualify participants to maintain specific vendor systems. A basic understanding of aviation or electronics and telecommunications is helpful.
