Course Overview

This advanced practical course provides a structured framework for assessing climate-related risks and developing effective adaptation strategies for organisations, assets, operations, and communities. It focuses on translating climate science and hazard information into practical risk insights that support investment, resilience, business continuity, and strategic decision-making. The programme covers the identification of physical climate hazards, exposure and vulnerability assessment, climate risk analysis, scenario-based assessment, and prioritisation of risks. Participants will examine how changing temperature patterns, extreme precipitation, flooding, drought, storms, sea-level rise, and other climate-related hazards can affect infrastructure, supply chains, operations, workforce, financial performance, and critical services. Particular emphasis is placed on practical risk assessment methodologies, including hazard identification, exposure mapping, vulnerability analysis, consequence assessment, risk scoring, scenario analysis, and the development of risk registers. Participants will work with approaches for distinguishing current climate risks from future risks under different climate scenarios. The course also focuses on converting risk assessments into actionable adaptation plans. Participants will evaluate adaptation measures, prioritise investments, establish resilience targets, define implementation responsibilities, and develop monitoring indicators to strengthen organisational preparedness and long-term climate resilience.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyse the principles and key drivers of physical climate risk.
  • Identify climate hazards relevant to organisational assets, operations, and supply chains.
  • Assess exposure and vulnerability to current and future climate hazards.
  • Apply structured methodologies for climate risk assessment and prioritisation.
  • Analyse climate scenarios and their implications for organisational resilience.
  • Evaluate potential operational, financial, infrastructure, and service impacts of climate hazards.
  • Develop climate risk registers incorporating likelihood, consequence, exposure, and vulnerability.
  • Identify and evaluate appropriate climate adaptation measures.
  • Prioritise adaptation actions based on risk reduction, feasibility, cost, and organisational value.
  • Integrate climate resilience into business continuity, asset management, investment, and strategic planning.
  • Establish governance structures, responsibilities, and indicators for adaptation programmes.
  • Develop practical climate adaptation plans with implementation priorities and monitoring mechanisms.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for sustainability and climate risk managers, environmental professionals, risk managers, resilience specialists, business continuity professionals, and strategic planning teams responsible for climate-related risk and organisational resilience. It is also suitable for infrastructure and asset managers, engineering professionals, project and investment managers, supply chain professionals, HSE teams, facilities managers, government officials, and decision-makers involved in climate resilience, infrastructure planning, or environmental risk management. The programme is particularly relevant to organisations operating critical infrastructure, energy, oil and gas, utilities, transportation, manufacturing, construction, real estate, financial services, government, and other climate-sensitive sectors.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret the main categories and drivers of physical climate risk.
  • Identify relevant climate hazards across assets, locations, operations, and value chains.
  • Assess organisational exposure to current and projected climate hazards.
  • Evaluate vulnerability using physical, operational, social, and organisational factors.
  • Apply qualitative and quantitative approaches to climate risk assessment.
  • Analyse climate scenarios and translate projections into business-relevant risk information.
  • Develop structured climate risk registers and risk prioritisation frameworks.
  • Evaluate financial, operational, infrastructure, and supply chain consequences of climate hazards.
  • Compare adaptation options based on effectiveness, feasibility, cost, and resilience benefits.
  • Integrate climate adaptation into strategic planning, asset management, and business continuity.
  • Establish adaptation governance, responsibilities, indicators, and review mechanisms.
  • Develop an actionable climate adaptation roadmap with prioritised measures and implementation milestones.
