Course Overview

The Client & Contractor Relationship Management in Projects Training Course equips client representatives, project managers, contract managers, contractors, consultants, and project leaders with the strategies, tools, and interpersonal skills needed to build and sustain productive, collaborative relationships between clients and contractors that support successful project delivery. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, developers, utilities, energy and oil and gas companies, healthcare systems, banks, and large corporations, most projects are delivered through contractors, consultants, and suppliers. The quality of the relationship between client and contractor strongly influences how risks are managed, how quickly problems are resolved, how changes and claims are handled, and ultimately whether the project achieves its time, cost, quality, and safety objectives. Many client and contractor relationships become adversarial. Contracts may be awarded on lowest price with unrealistic expectations, communication may be formal and defensive, and each party may focus on protecting its own position rather than solving shared problems. Early warnings of risks may not be raised, changes and variations may be disputed, payments may be delayed, performance issues may be addressed through letters rather than dialogue, and small disagreements may escalate into formal claims and disputes. Cultural differences, staff turnover, and unclear roles between clients, engineers, project management consultants, and contractors can further weaken trust and cooperation. This course provides a structured and practical approach to client and contractor relationship management, informed by collaborative contracting practices, international standards for collaborative business relationship management, and widely used international contract forms. Participants learn the dynamics of client and contractor relationships, the costs of adversarial behavior, and the principles of collaborative working, trust, and mutual interest from both client and contractor perspectives. The program covers building relationships from procurement and contract award onward, partnering approaches and partnering charters, relational and collaborative contracting models such as early contractor involvement and alliancing, and clarifying the roles of clients, engineers, project management consultants, contractors, and subcontractors. Participants then learn how to establish joint governance and communication protocols, integrated project teams, early warning and joint risk management practices, collaborative management of changes, variations, and claims, performance management with shared KPIs and constructive performance reviews, payment and cash flow practices that support delivery, and incentive mechanisms that align interests. The course also addresses dispute avoidance and early resolution, including dispute boards and escalation ladders, cultural and interpersonal considerations, relationship health checks and recovery of damaged relationships, managing subcontractor and supply chain relationships, and collaborative project closeout and lessons learned. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with case studies of collaborative and adversarial projects, partnering workshops, joint risk and change management exercises, negotiation and difficult conversation role plays from both client and contractor perspectives, and relationship health assessments. Participants leave with a relationship management plan template, a partnering charter template, a roles and responsibilities matrix for client, consultant, and contractor, a joint communication and meeting protocol, an early warning and joint risk register, a collaborative change management procedure, a shared performance KPI scorecard, a dispute avoidance and escalation ladder, and a relationship health check tool.
