Course Overview

This training course provides a complete program for designing and implementing circular-economy strategy at the level of organizations, industrial zones and national economies. Rather than treating circularity as one theme within industrial waste control or supply chain ESG, it covers the full transition: analyzing material flows, redesigning products and processes, adopting circular business models, building industrial symbiosis, measuring circularity performance, and preparing the business case for investment. Participants will examine circular-economy principles, the technical and biological cycles, and the policy landscape that is shaping demand, including national circular-economy policies and agendas in the Gulf region, the EU Circular Economy Action Plan, the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, and the ISO 59000 family of standards. Extended producer responsibility is treated as one policy lever among several, alongside green public procurement, product standards and economic instruments. The course then moves to practical tools: material-flow analysis and material flow cost accounting, design for durability, repair, remanufacture and recycling, product-as-a-service and sharing models, by-product exchange and shared utilities in industrial zones, and circularity indicators linked to financial, carbon and environmental performance. Through case studies, quantitative exercises and group workshops, participants will develop a circularity assessment, a portfolio of prioritized initiatives, a business case and a phased implementation roadmap that can be presented to executive leadership or a ministry steering committee.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain circular-economy principles, cycles and how they differ from linear and recycling-only approaches.
  • Interpret national and international circular-economy policies, standards and policy instruments.
  • Map material, energy and water flows using material-flow analysis techniques.
  • Quantify the cost of material losses through material flow cost accounting.
  • Identify and prioritize circularity opportunities across products, processes and sites.
  • Apply circular design principles for durability, repair, remanufacture and recycling.
  • Evaluate circular business models such as product-as-a-service, sharing and resource recovery.
  • Design industrial symbiosis exchanges for by-products, energy and water in industrial zones.
  • Plan reverse logistics and take-back systems that keep products and materials in use.
  • Select circularity indicators aligned with recognized international measurement guidance.
  • Build a business case that captures cost, revenue, risk and environmental value.
  • Establish governance, partnerships and change management for the circular transition.
  • Develop a phased circular-economy implementation roadmap with measurable targets.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for sustainability managers, circular-economy and ESG specialists, environmental managers, strategy and business development managers, product and process engineers, operations and plant managers, and industrial-zone and free-zone managers responsible for resource efficiency and circular initiatives. It is also suitable for officials in economy, industry and environment ministries, policy analysts and regulators, procurement and supply chain professionals, finance and investment analysts, innovation managers, and consultants who design or evaluate circular programs. The program is particularly beneficial for manufacturers, petrochemical, metals and construction materials companies, utilities, industrial cities and economic zones, government entities, and development organizations moving from waste control to circular value creation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Develop a circular-economy strategy aligned with organizational and national priorities.
  • Assess organizational circular maturity and exposure to linear risks.
  • Build material-flow models and mass balances for sites and value chains.
  • Quantify the financial value of material losses and recovery opportunities.
  • Prioritize circularity opportunities using structured screening criteria.
  • Apply circular design principles to products, components and processes.
  • Select circular business models suited to specific products and markets.
  • Design industrial symbiosis exchanges within industrial zones and clusters.
  • Structure reverse logistics and partnerships that keep materials in use.
  • Link circularity indicators to financial and carbon metrics.
  • Prepare a business case and financing approach for circular investments.
  • Establish governance and change management for the circular transition.
  • Produce a phased roadmap with measurable targets.
