Course Overview

This advanced practical course provides a structured approach to managing chemical and hazardous substance risks in the workplace, with a strong focus on exposure assessment, risk evaluation, and effective control measures in line with the principles and requirements of COSHH. The course examines chemical properties, health hazards, exposure routes, and workplace conditions that can influence exposure. Particular attention is given to inhalation, skin and eye contact, ingestion, handling, storage, transportation, and work processes that may release hazardous substances into the workplace. Participants will develop practical skills in interpreting Safety Data Sheets, chemical labels, hazard information, occupational exposure limits, and exposure assessment data. The program also addresses similar exposure groups, task-based assessments, monitoring requirements, and the identification of operations requiring priority intervention. A strong emphasis is placed on the hierarchy of controls, including elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative measures, local exhaust ventilation, containment, safe working practices, and personal protective equipment. Practical exercises focus on developing COSHH assessments, evaluating exposure conditions, assessing control effectiveness, and establishing effective hazardous substance management programs.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the principles of chemical and hazardous substance risk management.
  • Identify chemical hazards and potential health effects associated with hazardous substances.
  • Assess occupational chemical exposure routes and workplace exposure conditions.
  • Interpret Safety Data Sheets, chemical labels, and hazardous substance information.
  • Apply COSHH principles when assessing and controlling hazardous substance exposure.
  • Evaluate exposure levels against applicable occupational exposure limits.
  • Identify high-priority tasks, processes, and worker exposure groups.
  • Select appropriate engineering and administrative controls for chemical risks.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of local exhaust ventilation and containment systems.
  • Select appropriate personal protective equipment for chemical exposure scenarios.
  • Develop health surveillance and emergency response requirements for hazardous substance exposure.
  • Establish practical hazardous substance control programs with monitoring, review, and continuous improvement.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for industrial hygienists, occupational health professionals, HSE and EHS specialists, safety engineers, and personnel responsible for chemical exposure assessment and hazardous substance management. It is also suitable for plant, operations, and maintenance managers, process engineers, supervisors, laboratory personnel, chemical coordinators, facility professionals, environmental specialists, and risk management personnel. The program is particularly relevant to professionals working in oil and gas, petrochemicals, chemicals, manufacturing, mining, power generation, utilities, construction, laboratories, and other environments where hazardous substances require systematic assessment and control.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify chemical hazards and health risks associated with hazardous substances.
  • Determine exposure routes and worker groups requiring assessment.
  • Interpret Safety Data Sheets, labels, and technical chemical information.
  • Conduct practical COSHH assessments for workplace activities.
  • Evaluate exposure based on substance properties, work processes, duration, and intensity.
  • Apply occupational exposure limits when evaluating chemical risks.
  • Identify exposure conditions requiring additional controls or monitoring.
  • Select controls according to the hierarchy of controls.
  • Evaluate local exhaust ventilation, containment, and contamination prevention measures.
  • Select suitable personal protective equipment for chemical hazards.
  • Develop health surveillance and response requirements for abnormal exposure conditions.
  • Establish and continuously improve hazardous substance control programs.
