Course Overview

The Chemical Engineering Refresher Training Course equips process and chemical engineers with a structured, practical review of core chemical engineering principles and their application to the design, operation, troubleshooting, and optimization of process plants. In refineries, petrochemical, fertilizer, and chemical plants, gas processing and LNG facilities, power, water, and desalination plants, and pharmaceutical and manufacturing operations, engineers must apply fundamentals daily to evaluate performance, solve operating problems, review designs, and support safe and efficient operation. Over time, and particularly for engineers who have moved into operations, project, or management roles or are returning to technical work, these fundamentals can become less familiar, reducing confidence in technical judgement. The course revisits the essential building blocks of chemical engineering with a strong focus on industrial application. Participants review units and process calculations, material balances with recycle, bypass, purge, and reaction, energy balances, thermodynamics and phase equilibria, and fluid mechanics, including pressure drop, pumps, compressors, and two-phase flow. The program then covers heat transfer and heat exchanger performance, mass transfer and separation processes including distillation, absorption, stripping, extraction, adsorption, and membranes, chemical reaction engineering and reactor types, process control fundamentals, process design documentation and simulation, process safety principles, energy efficiency and pinch analysis, process economics, and a structured approach to process troubleshooting. The course is delivered through concise concept reviews, worked industrial examples, Excel-based calculation exercises, and troubleshooting case studies. Participants leave with a chemical engineering formulas and correlations reference, calculation workbooks for material and energy balances, hydraulics, heat exchangers, and distillation, a process troubleshooting framework, and a personal technical development plan.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the role of chemical engineering fundamentals in process design, operation, and troubleshooting on Day 1.
  • Apply unit conversions and process calculations accurately and consistently.
  • Perform material balances for systems with recycle, bypass, purge, and chemical reaction.
  • Perform energy balances and apply thermodynamic properties, equations of state, and phase equilibria, including flash calculations.
  • Apply fluid mechanics principles to calculate pressure drop and evaluate pumps, compressors, control valves, and two-phase flow.
  • Apply heat transfer principles to evaluate heat exchanger performance, fouling, and heat exchanger design methods.
  • Apply mass transfer principles to distillation, absorption, stripping, extraction, adsorption, and membrane separation.
  • Apply chemical reaction engineering principles, including kinetics, conversion, selectivity, catalysis, and reactor types.
  • Explain process control fundamentals, including feedback control, PID controllers, and control valves.
  • Interpret process design documentation and apply process simulation to evaluate process performance.
  • Apply process safety principles, energy efficiency and pinch analysis, and process economics to engineering decisions.
  • Apply a structured approach to process troubleshooting and optimization by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for chemical and process engineers who want to refresh and strengthen their technical fundamentals, including engineers returning to technical roles after periods in management, projects, or operations support. It is also relevant for recent graduates and early-career engineers seeking to connect academic knowledge with industrial practice, and for mechanical, petroleum, and other engineers moving into process engineering roles. It is particularly valuable for professionals in refineries, petrochemical, fertilizer, and chemical plants, gas processing and LNG facilities, oil and gas production facilities, power, water, and desalination plants, pharmaceutical and manufacturing plants, and engineering, procurement, and construction contractors and consultancies.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Apply chemical engineering fundamentals confidently in their daily work.
  • Carry out process calculations accurately with correct units.
  • Solve material balances for real process systems.
  • Solve energy balances and apply phase equilibria.
  • Calculate pressure drop and evaluate pumping and compression requirements.
  • Assess heat exchanger performance and fouling effects.
  • Evaluate separation equipment such as distillation and absorption columns.
  • Understand reactor behavior and factors that affect conversion and selectivity.
  • Explain how process control loops work.
