Course Overview

This advanced practical course equips exporters and the public bodies that support them to meet the data requirements of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). It focuses on calculating installation-level embedded emissions for CBAM goods, namely iron and steel, aluminum, cement, fertilizers, and hydrogen, and on delivering verified figures that EU importers can rely on in their CBAM declarations. The program covers the CBAM Regulation and its implementing rules, CN code scope, system boundaries, production processes, precursors, monitoring methods, the attribution of direct and indirect emissions to goods, and the role of default values compared with actual data. Participants will apply sector-specific calculation methods, prepare monitoring plans and emissions communications for importers, and get installations ready for independent verification, including site visits, materiality, and complete evidence trails. The course also addresses the commercial side of CBAM: the cost of relying on conservative default values, deductions for a carbon price effectively paid in the country of origin, contract clauses, and data confidentiality, so that exporters can protect market access and competitiveness. It builds on organization-wide greenhouse gas inventory methods without repeating them.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the scope, obligations, and actors of the EU CBAM Regulation and its implementing acts.
  • Classify exported goods by CN code, aggregated goods category, and production route.
  • Define installation system boundaries, production processes, and relevant precursors for CBAM goods.
  • Select appropriate calculation-based, mass-balance, or measurement-based monitoring methods.
  • Calculate direct and indirect embedded emissions and attribute them to specific goods.
  • Apply sector-specific methods for steel, aluminum, cement, fertilizer, and hydrogen production.
  • Assess the financial risk of relying on default values instead of actual data.
  • Prepare monitoring plans and emissions communications that meet importer requirements.
  • Organize evidence, controls, and records that support independent verification.
  • Document eligible carbon prices paid in the country of origin.
  • Structure supplier-importer data exchange with clear contract clauses and confidentiality safeguards.
  • Develop an installation-level CBAM readiness and data improvement plan.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for sustainability and environmental managers, carbon accounting specialists, plant and process engineers, energy managers, quality and compliance professionals, and finance and commercial teams at producers that export CBAM goods to the European Union. It is also suitable for officials in trade and industry ministries, export councils, customs authorities, and environmental regulators, as well as consultants, data and reporting teams, and supply chain professionals handling emissions data requests from EU customers. The program is particularly relevant to steel, aluminum, cement, fertilizer, and hydrogen producers, industrial zones, and export-oriented manufacturers in the Gulf, Africa, and other regions trading with the European Union.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret CBAM obligations and the information EU importers require from producers.
  • Map exported products to CN codes and aggregated goods categories.
  • Define installation system boundaries, production processes, and precursors.
  • Select and justify monitoring methods for each source stream.
  • Calculate direct and indirect embedded emissions for CBAM goods.
  • Apply production-route methods for steel, aluminum, cement, fertilizers, and hydrogen.
  • Quantify the cost difference between default values and verified actual data.
  • Prepare a monitoring plan and an emissions communication for EU customers.
  • Assemble evidence files that withstand independent verification.
  • Document carbon prices effectively paid in the country of origin.
  • Negotiate data exchange, confidentiality, and cost-sharing terms with importers.
  • Develop a practical CBAM readiness and data improvement roadmap for an installation.
