Course Overview

The Business Impact Analysis (ISO/TS 22317) Training Course equips business continuity, risk, resilience, and operations professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to plan, conduct, validate, and maintain business impact analyses in line with ISO/TS 22317 and the business continuity management system requirements of ISO 22301. The business impact analysis is the foundation of any business continuity program: it identifies which products, services, and activities matter most, how disruption impacts grow over time, how quickly they must be recovered, and which resources and dependencies they rely on. Government entities, ministries, banks, energy and utility companies, healthcare systems, telecommunications providers, and corporations depend on a sound analysis to set credible recovery objectives, select effective continuity strategies, and satisfy regulators, boards, and customers. Weak analyses based on generic questionnaires, inflated priorities, or missing dependencies lead to unrealistic recovery objectives, misdirected investment, and plans that fail when tested. The course follows the business impact analysis process from program design to reporting and maintenance. Participants learn the purpose and role of the analysis within a business continuity management system, the structure and guidance of ISO/TS 22317, key concepts and terms, and how to plan and scope the analysis, secure leadership support, and define impact categories, criteria, and time frames. The program then addresses product and service analysis to determine priorities, process and activity analysis, assessment of impacts over time across financial, operational, customer, legal and regulatory, reputational, safety, and environmental dimensions, and the determination of the maximum tolerable period of disruption, recovery time objectives, recovery point objectives, and minimum business continuity objectives. Participants also examine resource and dependency analysis covering people, facilities, technology, information, suppliers, and interdependencies, data collection through questionnaires, interviews, and workshops, validation, consolidation, and approval of results, analysis reporting, links to risk assessment and continuity strategy selection, and maintaining and reviewing the analysis over time. The course is delivered through case studies, analysis workshops and interview simulations, impact assessment and recovery objective exercises, dependency mapping exercises, and report preparation. Participants leave with a business impact analysis project plan template, an impact criteria and time-based impact matrix, a business impact analysis questionnaire and interview guide, a resource and dependency mapping template, and a business impact analysis report template. This course builds practical knowledge of ISO/TS 22317 and is not an official ISO certification.
