Course Overview

This practical course provides a structured approach to identifying, assessing, managing, and disclosing biodiversity and nature-related risks, with particular focus on the LEAP approach and the recommendations of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). It addresses how organizations depend on and affect ecosystems, and how land conversion, water use, pollution, and habitat loss translate into operational, regulatory, financial, and reputational risks for developers, lenders, and public agencies. The program covers nature dependencies and impacts, ecosystem services, the drivers of nature change, and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Participants apply the Locate, Evaluate, Assess, and Prepare phases of LEAP to sites and portfolios, establish biodiversity baselines, identify critical habitats and ecologically sensitive locations, and work through the mitigation hierarchy of avoid, minimize, restore, and offset. Particular emphasis is placed on no net loss and net gain planning, biodiversity offset design, and biodiversity management plans aligned with IFC Performance Standard 6. Through case studies of desert, coastal, marine, and mountain developments, participants map sensitive locations, score dependencies and impacts, test mitigation options, and draft nature-related disclosures covering governance, strategy, risk and impact management, and metrics and targets. They leave with a practical roadmap for integrating nature into project planning, enterprise risk management, lending decisions, and corporate reporting.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the relationship between biodiversity, ecosystem services, and business value.
  • Identify the main drivers of nature change and their links to organizational activities.
  • Distinguish nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities.
  • Interpret the TNFD recommendations, the LEAP approach, and related global biodiversity commitments.
  • Locate the organization's interface with nature and prioritize ecologically sensitive locations.
  • Evaluate dependencies and impacts using appropriate metrics, data sources, and ecosystem service mapping.
  • Design biodiversity baseline studies covering habitats, species, and ecosystem condition.
  • Identify critical and natural habitats and assess cumulative and indirect impacts on biodiversity.
  • Apply the mitigation hierarchy to avoid, minimize, restore, and offset biodiversity impacts.
  • Develop no net loss and net gain plans with measurable biodiversity indicators.
  • Assess nature-related risks and integrate them into enterprise risk management and investment decisions.
  • Prepare nature-related disclosures and an implementation roadmap aligned with the TNFD recommendations.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for sustainability and ESG managers, environmental and biodiversity specialists, HSE managers, environmental and social impact assessment practitioners, project and development managers, risk managers, sustainable finance and credit risk professionals, and officials in environment, wildlife, and protected area agencies who manage or oversee nature-related impacts and risks. It is particularly relevant to giga-project, real estate, and tourism developers; mining, oil and gas, energy, and infrastructure companies; banks and investors assessing nature-related risk in lending and portfolios; and environmental agencies and consultancies. It benefits most those preparing biodiversity strategies, mitigation plans, or their first nature-related disclosures.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain how organizations depend on and affect biodiversity and ecosystems.
  • Identify the drivers of nature change relevant to their operations.
  • Apply the LEAP approach to sites, value chains, and portfolios.
  • Prioritize ecologically sensitive locations using credible spatial and biodiversity data.
  • Measure nature-related dependencies and impacts with suitable indicators.
  • Specify the scope and methods of a biodiversity baseline study.
  • Recognize critical habitats, protected areas, and threatened species requiring special attention.
  • Apply the mitigation hierarchy to development and operational decisions.
  • Prepare no net loss and net gain plans with transparent loss-gain accounting.
  • Evaluate the design of biodiversity offsets and restoration measures.
  • Integrate nature-related risks into enterprise risk and investment processes.
  • Draft nature-related disclosures aligned with the TNFD recommendations.
