Course Overview

The Benefits Realization Management Training Course equips project sponsors, program and portfolio managers, PMO professionals, and business leaders with the frameworks and practical tools needed to ensure that projects and programs deliver the benefits and value that justified the investment. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks, healthcare systems, energy and utility companies, and large corporations, significant resources are invested in transformation, digital, infrastructure, and improvement initiatives. Yet many organizations measure success only by whether projects are delivered on time and within budget, not by whether they achieve the intended outcomes for citizens, customers, employees, and the organization. Benefits are frequently lost for predictable reasons. Business cases may promise benefits that are vague, overstated, or not linked to measurable indicators, baselines may not be established, and no one may be clearly accountable for realizing each benefit. Projects may deliver new systems, facilities, or processes, but the business changes and adoption needed to use them effectively are not planned or supported. Benefits may be double counted across initiatives, tracking may stop when the project closes, and post-implementation reviews may not be carried out. As a result, leadership has limited evidence of the value created and limited ability to learn from past investments. This course provides a structured and practical approach to benefits realization management, informed by recognized practices in portfolio, program, and benefits management. Participants learn the concepts of outputs, capabilities, outcomes, benefits, and dis-benefits, the different types of benefits, and how benefits management links strategy, business cases, and delivery. The program covers benefits identification and mapping, including benefits dependency networks that connect project outputs and business changes to strategic objectives, and the development of benefit profiles with clear measures, baselines, targets, timelines, and accountable benefit owners. Participants then learn how to build benefits registers and benefits realization plans, plan and support the business changes and adoption required, engage stakeholders, and establish governance roles, including senior responsible owners and benefit owners. The course also addresses tracking and reporting benefits during and after delivery, benefits reviews and post-implementation reviews, managing benefits at portfolio level, avoiding double counting and optimism bias, sustaining benefits over time, capturing social and public value, and assessing and improving benefits management maturity. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with benefits mapping workshops, measure and baseline design exercises, case studies, and a benefits realization plan developed for a real or case study initiative. Participants leave with a benefits dependency network, benefit profile templates, a benefits register, a benefits realization plan, a business change and adoption plan outline, a benefits tracking dashboard design, and a post-implementation review template.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for project sponsors, senior responsible owners, program and portfolio managers, PMO heads and analysts, project managers, and business change managers responsible for ensuring that initiatives deliver value. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, and public authorities managing transformation, digital government, and service improvement programs; in banks and financial institutions managing technology, regulatory, and business change portfolios; in healthcare systems managing clinical, facility, and system investments; and in energy, utilities, infrastructure, manufacturing, and service organizations managing capital and improvement portfolios. Senior executives, investment committees, and board members who approve investments and oversee portfolio performance will also benefit from the course.
