Course Overview

The Battery Energy Storage Systems Fire Safety Training Course equips HSE managers, fire protection and electrical engineers, project and operations teams, and fire authority officers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to identify, assess, and control the fire and explosion hazards of utility-scale lithium-ion battery energy storage systems. Grid-scale storage is being deployed rapidly alongside solar and wind plants, substations, data centers, and industrial sites, and each installation concentrates very large amounts of stored energy in containers or buildings. A single cell failure can escalate into thermal runaway, release flammable and toxic gases, and develop into a prolonged fire or a deflagration that endangers responders and neighboring assets. The course focuses on the hazards that distinguish large battery installations from conventional battery rooms and general fire safety. Participants learn BESS architecture, the hazard profiles of lithium iron phosphate and nickel manganese cobalt chemistries, thermal runaway triggers and propagation, off-gas composition, and stranded energy. The program then addresses NFPA 855, UL 9540, UL 9540A, and the IEC 62933 series, how to read large-scale fire test results, and how to prepare a hazard mitigation analysis and explosion consequence assessment. Participants also examine siting and separation distances, battery management system protections, off-gas and fire detection, the strengths and limits of water-based and gaseous suppression, deflagration venting and explosion prevention to NFPA 68 and NFPA 69, and fire water and runoff containment. Emergency response planning with civil defense receives particular attention, including responder information, defensive firefighting strategy, gas monitoring, evacuation zones, joint drills, and post-fire recovery. The final day covers operation and maintenance in hot, dusty climates, including thermal management, condition monitoring, DC electrical safety, and safety management. The course is delivered through failure pathway mapping, test report reviews, site layout assessments, and tabletop emergency exercises. Participants leave with a BESS hazard checklist, a hazard mitigation analysis template, a site layout review checklist, an emergency response plan template, and an inspection and maintenance checklist.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the architecture of utility-scale lithium-ion battery storage and its fire and explosion hazards on Day 1.
  • Compare the hazard profiles of lithium iron phosphate and nickel manganese cobalt chemistries at cell, module, and rack level.
  • Explain thermal runaway triggers, cell-to-cell propagation, off-gas composition, and stranded energy.
  • Apply NFPA 855, UL 9540, and the IEC 62933 series to battery storage design and permitting.
  • Interpret UL 9540A large-scale fire test results, including gas generation, heat release, and propagation outcomes.
  • Prepare a hazard mitigation analysis and assess fire and explosion consequences for a battery storage site.
  • Evaluate siting, separation distances, and layout options for containerized and indoor installations.
  • Select off-gas detection, fire detection, and suppression measures and recognize their limits against thermal runaway.
  • Apply deflagration venting and explosion prevention principles in line with NFPA 68 and NFPA 69.
  • Develop emergency response plans, responder information, and joint drills with civil defense and fire authorities.
  • Plan post-fire recovery, including handling damaged batteries, re-ignition control, and environmental cleanup.
  • Implement hot-climate operation and maintenance, DC electrical safety, and safety management practices by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for HSE managers and professionals, fire protection engineers, electrical and power engineers, and project, commissioning, and operations engineers responsible for battery energy storage systems. It is also relevant for fire safety officers and inspectors in civil defense and fire authorities, permitting and plan review officials, risk and insurance engineers, asset managers, emergency response team leaders, and site HSE managers at data centers and industrial facilities that host large battery installations. It is particularly valuable for professionals in electricity utilities and transmission companies, independent power producers and renewable energy developers, engineering, procurement, and construction contractors, oil and gas and petrochemical companies adding on-site storage, data center operators, ministries and regulators of energy and civil defense, and operation and maintenance service providers.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how large lithium-ion battery installations fail and why they burn or explode.
  • Compare battery chemistries by their fire and explosion hazards.
  • Recognize the warning signs of thermal runaway and off-gassing.
  • Apply the main standards for battery energy storage safety.
  • Interpret large-scale fire test reports with confidence.
  • Prepare a sound hazard mitigation analysis.
  • Choose safe sites, layouts, and separation distances.
  • Select effective detection, suppression, and explosion control measures.
  • Plan emergency response jointly with civil defense.
  • Manage damaged batteries and site recovery after a fire.
  • Operate and maintain battery storage safely in hot climates.
  • Strengthen battery storage safety management and audits.
