Course Overview

The ATM Automation & Digital Tower Technologies Training Course equips air navigation service provider professionals, air traffic management and engineering staff, civil aviation authority specialists, and aviation modernization teams with the knowledge and practical understanding needed to evaluate, plan, and implement air traffic management automation systems and digital and remote tower technologies that improve safety, capacity, efficiency, and resilience. Air navigation service providers are modernizing from legacy, controller-intensive systems toward integrated automation, data-driven decision support, and digital and remote tower services that can serve one or multiple airports from a remote center. Understanding these technologies, their benefits, and their safety, human factors, and implementation challenges is essential for sound investment and transition decisions. The course covers air traffic management automation and digital tower technologies from fundamentals to implementation. Participants learn the components and evolution of air traffic management automation systems, including flight data processing, surveillance data processing, and controller working positions, surveillance technologies and data fusion, and decision support and safety net tools such as conflict detection, medium-term conflict detection, arrival and departure management, and conformance monitoring. The program then addresses system-wide information management and digital data sharing, electronic flight strips and integrated controller tools, and the concept, architecture, and operation of digital and remote towers, including camera and sensor systems, visual presentation, augmented features, and single and multiple remote tower operations and contingency towers. Participants also examine the benefits and business case for automation and digital towers, human factors, automation levels, and the human-automation relationship, safety assessment and assurance for automation and digital tower systems, cybersecurity and resilience, procurement and implementation, transition and training, and future directions including artificial intelligence and higher levels of automation in air traffic management. The course is delivered through system architecture walkthroughs, decision support and digital tower case studies, benefits and safety assessment workshops, and implementation planning exercises. Participants leave with an air traffic management automation and digital tower reference, a decision support and safety net overview, a digital and remote tower assessment checklist, a safety and human factors assessment template, and an automation and digital tower implementation plan template. This course provides knowledge at a planning, engineering, and management level and is not an operational air traffic control or system-specific vendor certification program.
