Course Overview

API standards and industry codes provide the technical foundation for safe, reliable, and compliant operations across the oil and gas sector. Professionals involved in engineering, inspection, maintenance, asset integrity, construction, and operations must understand how these standards are developed, interpreted, and applied to ensure equipment reliability, process safety, and regulatory compliance throughout the asset lifecycle. This course introduces participants to the structure, purpose, and practical application of key American Petroleum Institute (API) standards and related industry codes used in upstream, midstream, and downstream operations. It covers the selection and interpretation of applicable standards, equipment design and inspection requirements, pressure equipment integrity, piping systems, storage tanks, welding, maintenance, and documentation. Particular attention is given to widely used standards, including API 510, API 570, API 653, API 650, API 610, API 618, and API 580, alongside relevant ASME standards and other recognised technical references. Through practical exercises and industry-based case studies, participants will strengthen their ability to identify applicable code requirements, interpret technical provisions, evaluate inspection and maintenance documentation, and support engineering decisions. The programme promotes consistent standards application, effective asset integrity management, improved coordination between technical teams, and informed decision-making across oil and gas facilities.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the purpose, structure, and role of API standards and codes in the oil and gas industry.
  • Identify relevant API and ASME standards for different equipment types and operational activities.
