Course Overview

This training course provides a management framework for establishing, running, and evaluating antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs in hospitals and healthcare networks. It treats stewardship as a complete organizational program covering governance, policy, measurement, audit and feedback, and education, and deliberately leaves individual prescribing and treatment decisions to clinical teams. The program examines how organizations align stewardship with the WHO Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance and national action plans, define committee terms of reference, secure leadership commitment and resources, and integrate stewardship with infection prevention, pharmacy, laboratory, and quality functions. Particular attention is given to restriction policies, the WHO AWaRe classification, consumption metrics such as days of therapy and defined daily doses, cumulative antibiograms, point prevalence surveys, and audit-and-feedback workflows. Through case studies, data exercises, and policy reviews, participants build the capability to run a measurable, sustainable stewardship program and report its performance to leadership.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the organizational and public health case for stewardship programs.
  • Align hospital stewardship with national action plans.
  • Establish stewardship committee structures and clear accountability.
  • Define the stewardship roles of pharmacy, microbiology, IPC, and nursing.

  • Design point prevalence surveys and structured audit-and-feedback processes.
  • Prepare stewardship performance reports for committees and executives.
  • Plan education and behavior change initiatives for staff groups.
  • Build a sustainable stewardship work plan with resources, risks, and improvement cycles.
