Course Overview

The Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) Training Course equips aeronautical information management and services staff, air navigation service provider professionals, civil aviation authority specialists, and aviation data and operations professionals with the knowledge and practical understanding needed to manage aeronautical information as a safety-critical, quality-assured, data-centric service. Aeronautical information, including information published in aeronautical information publications, charts, notices to airmen, and aeronautical data, is essential for flight planning, navigation, and safe operations. The discipline has evolved from traditional, product-based aeronautical information services toward aeronautical information management, which treats aeronautical information as managed digital data with defined quality, exchanged in standard formats to support performance-based navigation, system-wide information management, and modern air navigation. The course covers aeronautical information management from fundamentals to the digital future. Participants learn the role and importance of aeronautical information in safety, the transition from aeronautical information services to aeronautical information management, and the regulatory and standards framework. The program then addresses aeronautical information products and services, including the aeronautical information publication, notices to airmen, pre-flight information, and the aeronautical information regulation and control system and its amendment and cycle processes, data quality requirements including accuracy, resolution, integrity, traceability, and timeliness, and the data chain from origination to end use. Participants also examine aeronautical data and exchange models and standards, databases and data products such as terrain, obstacle, and aerodrome mapping data, quality management and safety management in aeronautical information management, data origination and the responsibilities of data originators, verification and validation, digital notices to airmen and the move toward digital aeronautical information, system-wide information management, and the people, competency, and organizational aspects of the transition to data-centric operations. The course is delivered through case studies, data quality and amendment cycle exercises, data chain analysis, and transition planning workshops. Participants leave with an aeronautical information management framework reference, a data quality requirements checklist, an amendment and aeronautical information regulation and control cycle guide, a data chain and originator responsibilities map, and an aeronautical information management transition planning template.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role and safety-criticality of aeronautical information and the transition to aeronautical information management on Day 1.
  • Explain the regulatory and standards framework for aeronautical information management.
  • Describe aeronautical information products and services, including the aeronautical information publication and notices to airmen.
  • Explain the aeronautical information regulation and control system and amendment and cycle processes.
  • Apply aeronautical data quality requirements, including accuracy, resolution, integrity, traceability, and timeliness.
  • Describe the aeronautical data chain from origination to end use and the roles along it.
  • Explain aeronautical data exchange models and standards.
  • Describe aeronautical databases and data products, including terrain, obstacle, and aerodrome mapping data.

  • Plan the people, competency, and organizational aspects of the transition to data-centric aeronautical information management by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for aeronautical information management and services staff, aeronautical information officers and specialists, air navigation service provider professionals, and civil aviation authority staff responsible for aeronautical information. It is also relevant for aeronautical data originators in airports, procedure design, and survey, charting and database specialists, quality and safety professionals in air navigation, and professionals involved in the transition to digital aeronautical information. It is particularly valuable for professionals in air navigation service providers, civil aviation authorities and regulators, airport operators as data originators, charting and aeronautical data organizations, and aviation technology providers and consultancies. A basic understanding of aviation or air navigation is recommended.
