Course Overview

This advanced training course develops the technical and leadership capabilities required to plan, facilitate, document, and close out Process Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies for complex oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical, and process facilities. It focuses on leading multidisciplinary HAZOP teams through structured analysis while maintaining technical discipline, effective challenge, and clear decision-making. The programme covers the complete HAZOP lifecycle, from study preparation and node selection through guideword application, deviation development, consequence and safeguard analysis, recommendation generation, documentation, and close-out. Participants examine how process design, operating conditions, equipment configuration, control systems, human factors, and protection layers interact to create hazards and operability concerns. Particular attention is given to advanced facilitation techniques, team dynamics, difficult discussions, safeguarding adequacy, consequence evaluation, action quality, study boundaries, and maintaining HAZOP independence. Participants also explore how HAZOP findings interface with LOPA, SIL assessment, risk management, process safety studies, design reviews, and Management of Change. Through realistic process scenarios, P&ID-based exercises, simulated HAZOP meetings, deviation analysis, safeguard evaluation, and recommendation reviews, participants develop the capability to lead effective HAZOP studies and produce technically robust, traceable, and actionable outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop advanced expertise in Process HAZOP methodology and leadership.
  • Plan HAZOP studies according to project scope, process complexity, and study objectives.
  • Define appropriate HAZOP boundaries, nodes, team composition, and preparation requirements.
  • Facilitate structured and technically rigorous HAZOP discussions.
  • Apply guidewords and process parameters to identify meaningful deviations.
  • Evaluate causes, consequences, existing safeguards, and risk significance.
  • Challenge weak or unsupported safeguards and assumptions constructively.
  • Distinguish genuine process safety concerns from issues outside the HAZOP scope.
