Course Overview

The 6G & Future Wireless Technologies Training Course equips telecommunications engineers, technology strategists, policy makers, regulators, and innovation leaders with a clear, evidence-based understanding of the next generation of wireless communications, the technologies expected to shape it, and the strategic, regulatory, and investment decisions organizations should begin preparing for now. While 5G and 5G-Advanced networks continue to be deployed and enhanced, international work on 6G is already well underway. The ITU has established the IMT-2030 framework defining the vision, usage scenarios, and capabilities of the next generation of mobile systems, 3GPP has begun 6G studies that are expected to lead to specifications later this decade, and spectrum studies are progressing toward future World Radiocommunication Conferences. Governments, operators, and industries that understand these developments early will be better positioned to shape standards, plan spectrum, and prepare their infrastructure and workforce. Discussions about 6G are often dominated by speculative claims and marketing, making it difficult for decision makers and engineers to distinguish established direction from research concepts that may or may not reach commercial deployment. Organizations may be uncertain about realistic timelines, how 6G will differ from 5G-Advanced, which technologies are most likely to be adopted, what spectrum will be used, and what the implications will be for national digital strategies, industrial applications, security, and sustainability. At the same time, other wireless technologies, including new generations of Wi-Fi, satellite and non-terrestrial networks, and optical wireless communications, are evolving and will interact with 6G. This course provides a structured and balanced overview of 6G and future wireless technologies, grounded in the work of international standards and regulatory bodies and in current research directions. Participants learn the evolution from earlier generations through 5G-Advanced, the drivers and societal goals shaping 6G, and the IMT-2030 usage scenarios and capabilities, including immersive communication, massive communication, hyper-reliable and low-latency communication, integrated sensing and communication, integrated artificial intelligence and communication, and ubiquitous connectivity. The program covers the expected standardization and deployment timelines, spectrum considerations across low, mid, upper mid-band, millimeter-wave, and sub-terahertz ranges, and key candidate technologies, including AI-native air interfaces and networks, integrated sensing and communication, extreme and cell-free massive MIMO, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, terahertz communications, integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, network digital twins, semantic and goal-oriented communications, and advances in energy efficiency. Participants then examine emerging 6G network architecture concepts, security, privacy, and trust, including quantum-safe cryptography, sustainability objectives, complementary technologies such as next-generation Wi-Fi and optical wireless communications, potential use cases in government, industry, transport, healthcare, and smart cities, and the policy, regulatory, spectrum, and investment implications. The course concludes with how organizations can assess readiness and develop a practical strategy for engaging with and preparing for 6G. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with technology briefings, analysis of standardization and spectrum developments, use case and scenario workshops, and the development of a 6G readiness roadmap. Because 6G is still being defined, the course distinguishes clearly between agreed frameworks, active standardization work, and research concepts. Participants leave with a 6G technology landscape summary, a comparison of 5G-Advanced and 6G capabilities, a spectrum developments tracker, a use case and value assessment framework, a technology maturity assessment template, and a 6G readiness and engagement roadmap for their organization.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate the ITU IMT-2030 framework, including its usage scenarios, capabilities, and objectives for the next generation of mobile systems.
  • Assess the current status and expected timelines of 6G standardization, research, and early deployment, distinguishing agreed frameworks from research concepts.
  • Evaluate spectrum considerations for 6G across low, mid, upper mid-band, millimeter-wave, and sub-terahertz ranges and related international spectrum studies.
  • Analyze key candidate 6G technologies, including AI-native air interfaces and networks, integrated sensing and communication, extreme and cell-free massive MIMO, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, and terahertz communications.
  • Evaluate the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks and the role of satellites and high-altitude platforms in ubiquitous connectivity.
  • Assess emerging 6G network architecture concepts, including cloud-native and AI-native design, network digital twins, and automation.
  • Evaluate security, privacy, and trust considerations for 6G, including quantum-safe cryptography and AI security.
  • Assess sustainability and energy efficiency objectives for future wireless networks.
  • Analyze complementary wireless technologies, including next-generation Wi-Fi and optical wireless communications, and their relationship with 6G.
  • Evaluate potential 6G use cases and their value for government, industry, transport, healthcare, energy, and smart cities, as well as policy, regulatory, and investment implications.
  • Develop a 6G readiness and engagement roadmap for the participant's organization by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for telecommunications engineers, network architects, research and development engineers, technology strategists, and innovation managers who need to understand the direction of future wireless technologies. It is also highly relevant for spectrum managers, regulatory and policy professionals, standardization delegates, and technical advisors involved in national digital infrastructure planning. It is particularly valuable for professionals in telecommunications regulators, ministries, and government entities responsible for digital strategy, spectrum policy, and national connectivity; in telecommunications operators, infrastructure providers, equipment vendors, and satellite operators; in universities, research centers, and innovation agencies; and in energy, utilities, transport, defense, healthcare, and smart city organizations planning long-term connectivity and digital transformation. Senior executives and investment decision makers seeking a realistic view of future wireless opportunities will also benefit from the course.
