Course Overview

This course provides practical knowledge of 5G security architecture, network vulnerabilities, and threat mitigation across the radio access network, 5G Core, service-based interfaces, and management systems. Participants examine security mechanisms defined for 5G networks, including authentication, subscriber identity protection, network slicing isolation, and secure communication between network functions. The course focuses on threat modelling, security assessment, monitoring, and incident response. Participants learn to identify exposed interfaces, assess risks associated with virtualised network functions and cloud-native deployments, and develop security controls aligned with operational requirements and recognised 5G security standards.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand 5G security architecture and its main protection mechanisms.
  • Identify threats affecting the radio access network, 5G Core, and service-based interfaces.
  • Assess authentication, subscriber privacy, and access control mechanisms.
  • Evaluate risks associated with network slicing, virtualisation, and cloud-native infrastructure.
  • Apply threat modelling and risk assessment techniques to 5G environments.
  • Identify weaknesses in network configuration and interface protection.
  • Develop monitoring, incident response, and mitigation procedures.
  • Align security controls with relevant 3GPP standards and operational requirements.

Who Should Attend

5G network and security engineers. Telecom core and radio access network specialists. Cybersecurity and SOC analysts. Network architects and security consultants. Cloud and virtualisation security professionals. Telecom risk and compliance specialists. Incident response and network operations teams.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the security architecture of 5G networks.
  • Identify threats affecting key network components and interfaces.
  • Evaluate authentication and subscriber identity protection mechanisms.
  • Assess security risks in network slicing and cloud-native deployments.
  • Develop threat models and prioritise security risks.
  • Recommend appropriate access controls, segmentation, and monitoring.
  • Investigate 5G security events and define mitigation measures.
  • Prepare a practical security improvement plan for a 5G environment.

Course Outline

Day 1

5G Security Architecture and Core Principles

  • 5G architecture: Radio Access Network (RAN), 5G Core, transport, and management domains.
  • Security responsibilities and trust boundaries between network components.
  • Service-Based Architecture (SBA) and communication between network functions.
  • Security roles of AMF, SMF, UPF, AUSF, UDM, and PCF.
  • Security principles: least privilege, defence in depth, segmentation, and secure configuration.
  • Overview of relevant 3GPP security specifications and deployment considerations.
  • Practical Exercise: Map a 5G network architecture, identify trust boundaries, and document critical assets and security controls.
Day 2

Authentication, Subscriber Privacy, and Interface Security

  • 5G authentication mechanisms, including 5G-AKA and EAP-AKA′.
  • Subscriber identity protection using SUPI and SUCI.
  • Authentication, authorisation, and access control for network functions.
  • Security of service-based interfaces, including mutual authentication and protected API communication.
  • Risks involving misconfigured interfaces, excessive permissions, and inadequate certificate management.
  • Secure configuration and validation of communication between network functions.
  • Practical Exercise: Review a simulated 5G interface configuration, identify authentication and access control weaknesses, and recommend corrective measures.
Day 3

5G Threats, Network Slicing, and Cloud Security

  • Threats affecting the RAN, transport network, 5G Core, and management interfaces.
  • Signalling abuse, denial-of-service risks, unauthorised access, and data exposure.
  • Network slicing security, isolation requirements, and cross-slice risk.
  • Virtualised network functions (VNFs) and cloud-native network functions (CNFs).
  • Container, orchestration, API, and infrastructure security considerations.
  • Supply-chain risks, insecure configurations, and shared infrastructure vulnerabilities.
  • Practical Exercise: Conduct a threat assessment for a 5G deployment using network slicing and cloud-native functions, then prioritise the identified risks.
Day 4

Security Monitoring and Incident Response

  • Establishing security baselines for network traffic and system behaviour.
  • Monitoring logs, authentication events, API activity, and network function communications.
  • Identifying anomalous signalling, suspicious access attempts, and configuration changes.
  • Security information and event management (SIEM) and correlation of network alerts.
  • Incident classification, escalation, evidence preservation, containment, and recovery.
  • Coordination between security operations, network engineering, and service management teams.
  • Practical Exercise: Analyse simulated 5G security alerts, determine the likely threat, and prepare an incident response plan with containment and recovery actions.
Day 5

Security Assessment, Hardening, and Compliance

  • Conducting structured security assessments of 5G network components and interfaces.
  • Reviewing identity management, access permissions, certificates, and interface exposure.
  • Applying secure configuration, patch management, vulnerability management, and change control.
  • Assessing security controls for slicing, cloud infrastructure, and network management.
  • Mapping security measures to relevant 3GPP requirements and organisational policies.
  • Defining security KPIs, remediation priorities, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a 5G security improvement plan covering priority vulnerabilities, recommended controls, remediation timelines, and verification criteria.
