Course Overview

The 5G RAN Planning & Optimization Training Course equips radio network planners, optimization engineers, and technical managers with the methods, tools, and practical skills needed to plan, dimension, deploy, and optimize 5G radio access networks that meet coverage, capacity, quality, and cost objectives. As telecommunications operators, private network owners, and infrastructure providers expand 5G across urban, suburban, rural, indoor, and industrial environments, the quality of RAN planning and optimization directly determines user experience, network efficiency, energy consumption, and return on investment. 5G introduces new frequency bands, wider channels, massive MIMO, beam-based operation, flexible TDD configurations, and dual connectivity with 4G, all of which change how radio networks must be planned and tuned. Many 5G deployments face planning and performance challenges. Link budgets and propagation assumptions may not reflect the characteristics of mid-band and millimeter-wave spectrum, site grids designed for 4G may not deliver the expected 5G coverage and capacity, and massive MIMO and beam configurations may not be optimized for local conditions. TDD configurations and synchronization errors can cause severe interference, parameter planning for physical cell identities, random access, and neighbor relations may be incomplete, and non-standalone deployments may suffer from anchor layer and dual connectivity issues. After launch, performance problems may be difficult to diagnose without a structured approach to measurements, key performance indicators, and root cause analysis. This course provides a structured, practical approach to 5G RAN planning and optimization, based on 3GPP specifications and recognized industry practices. Participants learn the 5G RAN planning process, from requirements and targets through coverage and capacity dimensioning, detailed design, deployment, and optimization. The program covers 5G New Radio link budgets for different bands and scenarios, propagation and channel models, site selection and grid design, small cells and indoor solutions, and specific considerations for millimeter-wave deployments. Participants then learn massive MIMO and beam management planning, TDD frame configuration and synchronization, interference analysis and mitigation, frequency, physical cell identity, random access, and neighbor planning, and planning for non-standalone and standalone architectures, including anchor layer and dual connectivity design. The course also addresses capacity dimensioning based on traffic models and service requirements, transport considerations, drive testing and measurement analysis, key performance indicators for accessibility, retainability, mobility, integrity, and availability, parameter optimization for antennas, power, beams, and mobility, self-organizing network functions, minimization of drive tests, AI-assisted optimization, energy saving features, troubleshooting of common performance problems, and planning considerations for private and industrial 5G networks. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with link budget and dimensioning calculations, planning exercises using realistic scenarios, measurement and KPI analysis, and troubleshooting case studies. Participants leave with a 5G link budget model, a coverage and capacity dimensioning worksheet, a parameter planning checklist, a TDD and interference management guide, a 5G KPI framework, a drive test analysis template, an optimization and troubleshooting flowchart, and a RAN planning and optimization plan for a case study network.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the 5G RAN planning and optimization process and the key differences from earlier mobile generations on Day 1.
  • Define planning requirements, service targets, and performance objectives for different 5G deployment scenarios.
  • Develop 5G New Radio link budgets for low, mid, and millimeter-wave bands in outdoor and indoor scenarios.
  • Apply propagation and channel models to predict coverage and assess the suitability of existing site grids.
  • Plan site selection, macro and small cell layers, and indoor solutions to meet coverage and capacity requirements.
  • Plan massive MIMO configurations and beam management to maximize coverage, capacity, and user experience.
  • Design TDD frame configurations and synchronization arrangements and identify and mitigate interference, including cross-link and remote interference.
  • Plan frequencies, physical cell identities, random access parameters, and neighbor relations for 5G networks.
  • Plan non-standalone and standalone deployments, including anchor layer design and dual connectivity considerations.
  • Dimension RAN capacity using traffic models, service requirements, and user demand forecasts, and assess transport implications.
  • Analyze drive test data, network counters, and key performance indicators to evaluate accessibility, retainability, mobility, integrity, and availability.
  • Apply parameter optimization, self-organizing network functions, AI-assisted optimization, energy saving features, and structured troubleshooting to improve 5G network performance by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for radio network planning engineers, RF optimization engineers, drive test and performance engineers, and RAN engineers responsible for planning, deploying, and optimizing 5G networks. It is also highly relevant for network architects, technical managers of RAN teams, transmission planners, and vendor and integrator engineers supporting 5G rollouts. It is particularly valuable for professionals in telecommunications operators, tower and infrastructure companies, equipment vendors, and system integrators; in telecommunications regulators and government entities responsible for spectrum management and network quality monitoring; and in energy, utilities, oil and gas, ports, airports, transport, and manufacturing organizations planning private and industrial 5G networks. Participants should have a basic understanding of mobile network fundamentals; prior 4G planning or optimization experience is helpful but not required.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the end-to-end process for planning and optimizing a 5G radio network.
  • Set realistic coverage, capacity, and quality targets for different scenarios.
  • Build and interpret 5G link budgets for different frequency bands.
  • Predict coverage and evaluate whether existing sites can support 5G requirements.
  • Plan the right mix of macro sites, small cells, and indoor solutions.
  • Configure massive MIMO and beams effectively for local conditions.
  • Design TDD configurations and prevent synchronization-related interference.
  • Complete physical cell identity, random access, and neighbor planning correctly.
  • Plan non-standalone and standalone deployments and their interaction with 4G.
  • Dimension network capacity based on traffic and service needs.
  • Analyze measurements and KPIs to identify performance problems.
  • Optimize parameters and troubleshoot common 5G RAN issues systematically.
