Course Overview

The 5G Network Architecture & Technologies Training Course equips telecommunications engineers, network planners, technical managers, and regulatory and enterprise technology professionals with a comprehensive understanding of how 5G networks are designed, built, and operated, and how 5G technologies enable new services across sectors. 5G is not simply a faster version of 4G. It introduces a new radio interface, a cloud-native service-based core network, network slicing, edge computing, and capabilities that support enhanced mobile broadband, ultra-reliable low-latency communications, and massive machine-type communications. These capabilities are central to national digital strategies, smart cities, digital government, industrial automation, energy and utilities modernization, transport, healthcare, and private enterprise networks. Organizations planning, deploying, regulating, or using 5G face significant technical complexity. Engineers must understand new spectrum bands, massive MIMO and beamforming, flexible radio numerology, disaggregated and open radio access networks, new transport requirements, and a core network built on virtualization and microservices. Decisions about non-standalone versus standalone deployment, spectrum strategy, core architecture, network slicing, edge computing placement, security, and migration from 4G have long-term implications for performance, cost, and service capability. At the same time, enterprises and public entities need to understand what 5G can realistically deliver for their use cases, including private and industrial networks. This course provides a structured, end-to-end view of 5G architecture and technologies, based on the international standards developed through 3GPP and the requirements defined by the ITU for IMT-2020. Participants learn the evolution of mobile networks, 5G requirements and use case categories, and the progression of 5G standards releases, including 5G-Advanced. The program covers 5G spectrum in low, mid, and high bands, the 5G New Radio air interface, including OFDM numerology, frame structure, TDD, carrier aggregation, massive MIMO, and beamforming, and radio access network architecture, including gNB functional splits, centralized and distributed units, open and virtualized RAN, and fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul transport. Participants then study non-standalone and standalone deployment options and the 5G Core service-based architecture, including its main network functions, cloud-native design, network function virtualization, and quality of service framework. The course also addresses network slicing, multi-access edge computing, 5G security architecture, synchronization and transport network design, private and industrial 5G networks, reduced capability devices for IoT, non-terrestrial networks, network planning and deployment considerations, energy efficiency, network automation and operations, migration from 4G, and the outlook for 5G-Advanced and 6G. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with architecture walkthroughs, protocol and call flow analysis, network design exercises, and case studies of public and private 5G deployments. Participants leave with a 5G architecture reference guide, a 5G Core network functions summary, a spectrum and deployment options comparison, a network slicing design template, an edge computing use case assessment framework, a 5G security checklist, and a 5G deployment or adoption roadmap for their organization.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the evolution of mobile networks, the requirements of IMT-2020, and the three main 5G use case categories on Day 1.
  • Evaluate the structure and progression of 3GPP 5G standards releases, including 5G-Advanced enhancements.
  • Assess 5G spectrum options across low, mid, and high bands and their implications for coverage, capacity, and deployment.
  • Analyze the 5G New Radio air interface, including OFDM numerology, frame structure, TDD, carrier aggregation, massive MIMO, and beamforming.
  • Evaluate 5G radio access network architecture, including gNB functional splits, centralized and distributed units, open and virtualized RAN, and transport requirements.
  • Compare non-standalone and standalone deployment options and their migration implications from 4G networks.
  • Analyze the 5G Core service-based architecture, its main network functions, cloud-native design, and quality of service framework.
  • Design network slicing concepts and assess their use for differentiated services and enterprise applications.
  • Evaluate multi-access edge computing architectures and identify suitable low-latency and data-intensive use cases.
  • Assess 5G security architecture, authentication, privacy protection, and security considerations for virtualized and open networks.
  • Evaluate private and industrial 5G networks, reduced capability devices, and non-terrestrial network integration for sector-specific applications.
  • Develop a 5G deployment or adoption roadmap addressing planning, transport, operations, automation, energy efficiency, and future evolution toward 6G by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for telecommunications engineers, radio access and core network engineers, transport and IP network engineers, network planners and architects, and technical managers involved in planning, deploying, or operating mobile networks. It is also highly relevant for solution architects, pre-sales engineers, IT and cloud infrastructure professionals working with telecom platforms, and cybersecurity professionals responsible for mobile and critical network security. It is particularly valuable for professionals in telecommunications operators, infrastructure providers, and system integrators; in telecommunications regulators, ministries, and government entities responsible for spectrum policy, digital infrastructure, and national connectivity programs; in energy, utilities, oil and gas, ports, airports, transport, and manufacturing organizations evaluating private and industrial 5G networks; and in public safety, healthcare, smart city, and banking organizations exploring 5G-enabled services. Technical managers and decision makers who need a clear understanding of 5G capabilities and investment implications will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain what makes 5G fundamentally different from previous mobile generations.
  • Describe the main 5G standards releases and what each adds.
  • Compare spectrum options and their effects on coverage and capacity.
  • Explain how the 5G radio interface, massive MIMO, and beamforming work.
  • Describe RAN functional splits and the principles of open and virtualized RAN.
  • Choose between non-standalone and standalone deployment for a given scenario.
  • Explain the role of each main network function in the 5G Core.
