This practical training course develops the skills needed to interpret 2D and 3D seismic data with confidence and turn it into defensible maps and prospects. It explains how seismic reflections relate to subsurface rock and fluid properties, what the interpreter must understand about acquisition and processing, and how interpretation results support exploration, appraisal, and field development decisions. The course begins with the fundamentals of the seismic method at a practical level, including acoustic impedance, reflection coefficients, wavelets, polarity, vertical and lateral resolution, and tuning effects. Participants then examine the acquisition and processing concepts that shape the data they interpret, such as 2D and 3D survey geometry, fold, migration, time and depth domains, data quality, noise, multiples, and common artifacts, without teaching processing itself. A major focus is placed on interpretation workflows. Participants learn to tie wells to seismic using synthetic seismograms and checkshot and vertical seismic profile data, pick horizons and faults, recognize structural styles, build time and depth maps, and identify closures and traps. The course also covers seismic stratigraphy, including reflection terminations, sequence boundaries, and seismic facies, together with velocity models and time-to-depth conversion at a concept level. The final part of the course addresses seismic attributes, amplitude analysis, direct hydrocarbon indicators, and amplitude variation with offset at a concept level, with particular attention to pitfalls and false indicators. Through guided exercises on seismic and well data, participants will develop the ability to build a consistent interpretation, evaluate a prospect, assess key uncertainties, and communicate results clearly to multidisciplinary teams and decision-makers.
