Course Overview

The ISO/IEC 42001 AI Management System (AIMS) Implementation Training Course equips AI governance leads, risk and compliance managers, data and technology leaders, and internal auditors with the practical knowledge needed to build, operate, and improve an AI management system that follows the structure of ISO/IEC 42001. The standard sets out requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving a management system for the responsible development, provision, or use of AI systems, and it gives organizations a common way to show how AI risks are identified, owned, and controlled. The course focuses on the standard itself rather than on AI governance, ethics, or AI risk management in general. Participants work through its requirements in order: the context of the organization, its role as an AI provider, developer, or user, and the scope of the system; leadership, AI policy, and roles; AI risk assessment, AI system impact assessment, and risk treatment; the reference controls and the statement of applicability; support processes such as competence, awareness, and documented information; operational control across the AI system lifecycle; data, third parties, and human oversight; and performance evaluation through monitoring, internal audit, and management review. Participants learn how the standard sits alongside management systems their organizations may already run, such as ISO/IEC 27001 for information security, ISO 9001 for quality, and ISO 31000 guidance for risk, and how to reuse shared processes instead of building parallel ones. The course explains the requirements of the standard and how to apply them; it does not provide legal advice, and participants apply the content within the laws and regulations that govern their own organizations. The course prepares participants for implementation and audit readiness work; certification of an organization's system is carried out separately by independent certification bodies. The course is delivered through a case organization that runs across all five days, gap analysis exercises, AI risk and impact assessment workshops, control selection exercises, and an internal audit simulation. Participants leave with a gap analysis against the standard, an AI system inventory structure, an AI risk and impact assessment method, a draft statement of applicability, and an implementation roadmap they can adapt to their own organizations.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the purpose, scope, and structure of ISO/IEC 42001 and how it differs from general AI governance frameworks.
  • Define the context of the organization, its AI roles, interested parties, and the scope of the AI management system.
  • Establish leadership commitment, an AI policy, and clear roles and responsibilities for AI systems.
  • Build an inventory of AI systems in use or in development as the basis of the management system.
  • Assess AI risks with a consistent method that links each AI system to its owners, data, and context of use.
  • Conduct AI system impact assessments that consider effects on individuals, groups, and society.
  • Select controls for risk treatment and prepare a statement of applicability with clear justifications.
  • Apply operational controls across the AI system lifecycle, from design and data to deployment and retirement.
  • Set requirements for data quality, third-party AI components, and human oversight.
  • Plan competence, awareness, and communication so that staff understand their responsibilities for AI.
  • Control documented information so that the system produces evidence an auditor can follow.
  • Plan and conduct internal audits and management reviews of the AI management system.
  • Handle nonconformities through corrective action and continual improvement.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for AI governance leads, heads of data and analytics, chief information and technology officers, risk and compliance managers, and management system coordinators who are responsible for building or strengthening an AI management system based on ISO/IEC 42001. It is equally relevant for information security and privacy managers, internal auditors, quality and integrated management system managers, and legal and regulatory affairs staff. Product owners and project managers who deliver AI systems, or buy them from vendors, will also benefit. Professionals in banks and financial institutions, government entities, telecommunications, healthcare, energy, and technology companies, and in multinational groups will find the course directly applicable, as will advisers who support organizations with responsible AI programs. It is particularly valuable for organizations that already run ISO/IEC 27001 or ISO 9001 and want to bring AI into an integrated system, and for teams preparing their AI management system for an internal or external audit.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the structure of ISO/IEC 42001 and what each group of requirements asks an organization to do.
  • Define the AI roles, context, interested parties, and scope of an AI management system.
  • Build and maintain an inventory of AI systems with clear owners.
  • Assess AI risks with consistent criteria and decide on their treatment.
  • Carry out an AI system impact assessment for a system in its context of use.
  • Prepare a statement of applicability that justifies each control included or excluded.
  • Apply lifecycle controls covering design, data, testing, deployment, and retirement.
  • Set requirements for third-party AI components and human oversight.
  • Set documented information requirements that support audit evidence.
  • Plan and conduct an internal audit of the AI management system.
  • Run management reviews and corrective action that lead to continual improvement.
  • Prepare an implementation roadmap that integrates AI with existing management systems.
