Course Overview
The DWDM & Optical Transport Networks (OTN) Training Course equips transmission engineers, network planners, operations and maintenance staff, and telecommunications professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to understand, design, deploy, operate, and troubleshoot dense wavelength division multiplexing and optical transport networks that carry the high-capacity backbone traffic of modern telecommunications and enterprise networks. Telecom operators, government networks, energy and utility companies, data center operators, and large enterprises rely on DWDM and OTN to transport huge volumes of data, voice, and video over long distances with high reliability and efficiency. As traffic grows and services such as 5G, cloud, and data center interconnect expand, engineers must understand optical transport technologies to plan capacity, ensure performance, and maintain resilient networks. The course covers optical transport from fundamentals to operations. Participants learn optical fiber and transmission fundamentals, including fiber types, attenuation, dispersion, and nonlinear effects, the principles of wavelength division multiplexing and DWDM, and key optical components such as lasers, transponders, muxponders, optical amplifiers, multiplexers and demultiplexers, and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers. The program then addresses DWDM system architecture, the optical transport network hierarchy and framing, including optical channel structures, mapping and multiplexing of client signals, overhead, and forward error correction, and coherent optical technology and high-order modulation enabling 100G, 400G, and beyond. Participants also examine network topologies and protection and restoration, optical power budgets and link design, synchronization, management and control planes including software-defined networking and control-plane concepts, performance monitoring, alarms, fault management, and structured troubleshooting of optical and OTN layer problems, along with applications such as data center interconnect and transport for mobile networks. The course is delivered through system architecture walkthroughs, link budget and capacity planning exercises, framing and mapping analysis, alarm interpretation, and troubleshooting case studies. Participants leave with an optical transport design reference, an optical link budget worksheet, an OTN framing and mapping guide, an alarms and performance monitoring reference, and an optical transport troubleshooting checklist.
