Course Overview

The Corporate ESG Program Implementation: Targets, KPIs & Performance Tracking Training Course equips sustainability managers, strategy and performance teams, and operational leaders with the practical methods needed to turn an approved environmental, social, and governance strategy into a program that runs inside the company. Many organizations have published commitments and policies, yet struggle when it comes to translating them into targets that functions own, data that can be trusted, and progress that management reviews as seriously as financial results. The course focuses on implementation and performance management rather than on ESG strategy in sustainable finance, board oversight, or reporting standards. Participants do not study how to prepare a sustainability report or how investors assess ESG. Instead, they work on the part of the job that happens between strategy and disclosure: choosing material topics to act on, setting baselines and targets, selecting key performance indicators, assigning owners, building data collection routines, and tracking performance through regular reviews. Participants examine how to break company-level ambitions into targets for sites, functions, and suppliers; how to define indicators for energy, emissions, water, waste, health and safety, workforce, community, and governance topics; and how to set data owners, controls, and evidence so that figures stand up to internal audit and external assurance. The course also covers action plans and budgets, links to the risk register and to performance appraisal, and how to report progress to management and the board. Frameworks and standards are discussed generically and applied within the laws and requirements that govern each company. The course is delivered through company case studies, target setting exercises, KPI design workshops, data flow mapping, and a final implementation workshop. Participants leave with a target and KPI matrix, a KPI definition sheet, a data ownership and control map, a performance dashboard outline, and an ESG program implementation plan they can adapt to their own organizations.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain what separates an ESG program that runs inside the company from an ESG strategy on paper.
  • Select the material topics the program will act on and the evidence behind each choice.
  • Establish baselines for each topic using records, meters, and systems the company already holds or can set up.
  • Set company-level targets and break them down to sites, functions, and suppliers.
  • Define key performance indicators with clear formulas, units, scope, and frequency.
  • Assign owners for targets, indicators, and data, with defined responsibilities for collection, review, and approval.
  • Design data collection routines, controls, and evidence that withstand audit and assurance.
  • Build action plans and budgets that show how each target will be reached.
  • Link the ESG program to the risk register, business planning, and performance appraisal.
  • Track progress through a performance dashboard and regular management reviews at company, function, and site level.
  • Respond to off-track performance with corrective actions and revised plans that name an owner and a deadline.
  • Report program progress to management and the board in a consistent format.
  • Prepare an implementation plan that phases the program across the company.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for sustainability and ESG managers, strategy and corporate performance managers, and program and project managers who are responsible for putting an ESG strategy into practice and tracking its results. It is equally relevant for health, safety, and environment managers, energy and facilities managers, human resources and procurement leaders who own social and supply chain targets, and finance and internal audit staff who review ESG data. Operational managers at sites and plants who will deliver targets will also benefit. Professionals in listed companies, state-owned enterprises, energy and utilities, manufacturing, construction and real estate, logistics, banks, and large private groups will find the course directly applicable, as will advisers who support companies with ESG programs. It is particularly valuable for companies that have approved an ESG strategy or published commitments and now need targets, owners, and data that make progress visible, and for teams preparing ESG data for audit or external assurance.
