Course Overview

This advanced training course provides a practical framework for managing safety across airport airside operations, where aircraft movements, ground handling, vehicles, personnel, equipment, and operational interfaces interact within a high-risk environment. It focuses on the systems, controls, and operational practices required to prevent incidents and maintain safe, compliant airside operations. The programme examines key airside safety risks including aircraft movements, vehicle operations, apron activities, ground support equipment, runway and taxiway hazards, foreign object debris, aircraft turnaround activities, construction interfaces, wildlife hazards, adverse weather, and human factors. Participants develop a structured approach to identifying hazards and controlling operational risk. Particular emphasis is placed on Safety Management Systems, risk assessment, incident prevention, safety assurance, emergency preparedness, safety reporting, and the coordination of multiple stakeholders operating within the airside environment. Practical exercises and operational scenarios are used to strengthen decision-making and risk-control capabilities.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyse the main hazards associated with airport airside operations and aircraft ground movements.
  • Apply structured methods for identifying and assessing airside safety risks.
  • Evaluate risks associated with aircraft, vehicles, personnel, equipment, and operational interfaces.
  • Develop effective controls for apron, runway, taxiway, and manoeuvring-area hazards.
  • Strengthen airside vehicle and driver safety management practices.
  • Apply effective controls for Foreign Object Debris and airside housekeeping risks.
  • Assess human factors and operational behaviours that contribute to airside incidents.
  • Implement effective safety reporting, investigation, and corrective-action processes.
  • Evaluate airside emergency preparedness and response arrangements.
  • Apply Safety Management System principles to day-to-day airside operations.
  • Establish meaningful airside safety performance indicators and assurance activities.
  • Develop practical improvement actions for strengthening airside safety performance.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for airport and aviation professionals responsible for airside safety, operational control, compliance, risk management, and safety assurance. It is particularly suitable for airport operations managers, airside operations officers, safety managers, aviation safety specialists, apron managers, airport duty managers, ground operations managers, airfield managers, compliance professionals, emergency planning personnel, and supervisors responsible for airside activities. The programme is also valuable for representatives of airlines, ground handling companies, airport service providers, regulators, maintenance organisations, contractors, and other organisations whose activities interface with the airport airside environment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and classify hazards across different areas of the airside environment.
  • Conduct structured airside safety risk assessments.
  • Analyse the causes and contributing factors of airside incidents and near misses.
  • Evaluate aircraft, vehicle, pedestrian, and equipment interaction risks.
  • Develop appropriate controls for apron and aircraft turnaround activities.
  • Assess runway, taxiway, and manoeuvring-area safety hazards.
  • Apply effective FOD prevention and control practices.
  • Evaluate human factors, communication, fatigue, workload, and behavioural risks.
  • Establish effective safety reporting and corrective-action processes.
  • Assess the effectiveness of airside emergency response arrangements.
  • Monitor safety performance using relevant operational indicators and assurance methods.
  • Develop an integrated airside safety improvement action plan.
